The Stella Soulioti Human Rights Award was established in 2021 as a tribute to the multifaceted personality and recognition of the legacy of Stella Soulioti who inspired future generations in Cyprus. The Award is presented annually to a person or Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) for their outstanding contribution to the struggle for the defence of human rights in Cyprus.
The Award Evaluation Committee for 2023, consisting of the Minister of Foreign Affairs (Chairman), the Minister of Justice and Public Order, the Commissioner for Administration and Human Rights Protection, as well as the ex-officio members Mrs Antroulla Christofidou-Henriques (founder of "Cyprus Stop Trafficking" which was awarded the "Stella Soulioti" Award in 2022) and Mrs Titina Loizidou, decided this year to award the "Stella Soulioti" Award for the year 2023 to the Cyprus Paraplegic Organization.
The Cyprus Paraplegics Organisation was founded in 1980 with the aim of promoting the resolution of the particular problems faced by people with spinal cord injury. Through its activities for forty-three years, the Organization has been a pioneer in promoting independent living, improving the standard of living and social integration of people with disabilities, especially those with mobility difficulties, as well as in raising awareness and respect for the rights of people with disabilities in Cypriot society.
The Award Evaluation Committee also decided to award a commendation to the organisations "Caritas Cyprus Society" and "Generation for Change CY" for their contribution and work in the protection of human rights in Cyprus.
The award ceremony will take place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday 28 December 2023.
