In relation to today's article in the newspaper "Phileleftheros" entitled "New bomb in natural gas - Buried dangerous materials", the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry (MoEEB) clarifies, first of all, that the rehabilitation works of the area where the LNG import terminal will be implemented, as well as the armouring of the coastline, have already been completed and will not be a reason to delay the construction of the terminal, as stated in the publication. In addition, it is clarified that. [*]As part of the requirements for the environmental restoration of the area, initial studies were carried out by the State and, at the same time, some restoration works were carried out in the area and the shielding of the seafront to prevent any spillage of chemicals into the sea. [*]Towards the preparation of the spatial planning for the Vasilikos Energy and Industrial Area, the Hellenic Ministry of Environment prepared a Strategic Environmental Impact Study, which had demonstrated the existence of phosphogypsum in the area where the Greek Chemical Industries were previously located. [*]In addition, in 2017, with the decision to establish the LNG import terminal at Vasilikos, the preparation of the relevant studies and planning began. As part of the required studies, the Environmental Impact Assessment Study (EIA) for the LNG import project was prepared and submitted. The relevant environmental opinion was issued by the Department of Environment in October 2017 and included, inter alia, conditions for remediation of the area from phosphogypsum. [*]Therefore, after consultations between all stakeholders, it was decided that the Department of Public Works would issue a tender for the remediation of the area, based on the conditions set out in the environmental opinion and the results of a relevant study by the Department of Labour Inspection. [*]This tender was awarded on 30 May 2019 and the remediation works were completed approximately one year later, in May 2020. The total cost of these works amounted to €3.86 million. [*]Therefore, the remediation works of the area where the LNG import terminal will be implemented, as well as the armouring of the coastline, have already been completed and will not be a reason for delaying the construction works of the terminal, as stated in the publication.
