The Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment welcomes today's decision of the General Court of the European Union rejecting the application for annulment of Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2021/591, of 12 April 2021 entering a name in the Register of Protected Designations of Origin and Protected Geographical Indications ['HALLOUMI' (HALLOUMI)/'HELLIM' (PDO)].
The next important milestone is the publication of the new European Regulation on Geographical Indications, expected next March, which provides for the possibility of extending the transitional period by five years for the implementation of the product specification. As announced on 26 January 2024, in the next period, the President of the Republic will convene a meeting in the presence of all those involved in the halalumi production sector (cheese makers, cow farmers, sheep and goat farmers), where the Government's decisions will be announced.
We continue to work hard, on the basis of the implementation of the Governance Programme, with actions aimed at protecting and promoting PDO hallemol and intensifying controls to certify the authenticity of the PDO hallemol produced, as defined by the specifications approved by the EU. We are proceeding with the establishment of the Interdisciplinary Committee, with the participation of all stakeholders, as well as with the creation of software to count the quantity of goat's and sheep's milk.
It should be noted that, as regards the minimum proportion of goat's and sheep's milk in the raw materials used for the production of halalumi, the relevant Decree of the Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry is in force (K.Decree 35/2024) which sets the quotas as follows:
i) For the period between 31 January and 21 February 2024 inclusive, at 19%; ii) For the period between 22 February 2024 and 9 July 2024 inclusive, at 25%.
