The Larnaca Search and Rescue Coordination Centre (LRC) announces that on Wednesday 24 January 2024 at 04:30 it received information from the merchant ship "FOLEGANDROS", which was sailing at a distance of 30 nautical miles east of Cape Greco, about the discovery of a small wooden boat with approximately 60 persons.

The KSEED activated the National Search and Rescue Plan "NEARCHOS", immediately mobilizing a vessel of the Coast and Maritime Police, which picked up all the persons in order to transport them safely to Ayia Napa Marina.

During the pick-up it was found that three children and one man were in an unconscious state, while three other persons had fractures in their lower limbs. Immediately the crew of the Coast Guard boat provided Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and first aid, while a boat of the Coast and Maritime Police, a helicopter of the Air Operations Unit (AOU) of the Police Headquarters and a helicopter of the 460 Rescue Search and Rescue Squadron (RSF) of the National Guard were also mobilized, which transported the critically ill and injured to Famagusta and Nicosia hospitals, accompanied by specialised nurses of the MEDEVAC teams of the Ambulance Service of the State Health Services Organisation (SHSO).

The remaining persons were received by the competent services of the Republic of Cyprus and received the necessary treatment, since according to the initial information the vessel sailed from Lebanon on 18 January 2024.
