The Deputy Ministry of Culture expresses its deepest sorrow for the unexpected death of the great actress Maria Michas who faithfully served the Cypriot theatre for decades.

Maria Michas was born in 1949 in Edessa. She studied at the Karolos Koun Art Theatre and at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Athens. During her studies she met her husband, the leading Cypriot director Nikos Charalambous, with whom she had two daughters, Danae and Niobe, who followed in her mother's footsteps and became an actress. She worked with all the holy monsters of stage direction of the time, such as Evis Gavriilides, Nikos Siafkalis and of course her husband Nikos Charalambous.

Special mention should be made of her participation in the chorus of Euripides' legendary play Icetides, directed by Nikos Charalambous, which was staged by the Cyprus Theatre Organisation and presented in Athens and Epidaurus. It is a landmark performance, which is now considered historic. In the late 1980s, she lived with her husband and daughters for a time in Kalamata when Nikos Charalambous took over as Artistic Director of the city's DIPETHE. Upon her return to Cyprus in the 1990s, she performed important roles in both state and independent theatre, as well as participating in notable television series.

The Deputy Ministry of Culture expresses its sincere condolences to her family. Maria Micha will always live on in our memory for her unique beauty, personality and multifaceted talent.
