An agreement was signed between the Deputy Ministry of Culture and the Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftsmanship for the participation of the Cyprus Crafts Service as an institutional partner in the Homo Faber Fellowship Programme. The agreement was signed between the Deputy Minister of Culture Dr. Vasiliki Kassianidou and the Director General of the Michelangelo Foundation. The Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftsmanship is an international non-profit organisation based in Switzerland that aims to promote and preserve excellence and craftsmanship practice, enhancing its connection with design and the wider arts.

As part of its activities in recent years, the foundation also promotes the "Homo Faber Fellowship", which aims to facilitate the first steps of employment for young craftspeople and graduates of schools of applied arts to enable them to enter the professional world of crafts. At the same time, it allows experienced master craftsmen and craft workshops to pass on their skills to a younger generation at minimum cost. Today, transferring the knowledge of the craftsman/artisan to younger people has been identified as one of the most important gaps.

The Scholarship is for applied arts and crafts graduates looking for the next step in their career path. Scholarship recipients on the one hand must demonstrate talent, passion and creativity, and on the other hand, the excellence/educators must demonstrate a willingness to educate and pass on their knowledge to younger generations.

Specifically, by prioritising work integration and skills acquisition, the Foundation's programme seeks to promote the Crafts sector as a career option for the next generation and to provide opportunities for business development. The Fellowship is designed as a mobility programme that started in September 2023 allowing young artisans/designers/craftspeople to train locally or in other participating countries.

The seven-month fellowship includes a one-month certified business masterclass (4- 27 September 2024), designed and delivered by an academic partner in a university setting, combined with a six-month internship to gain practical skills in an artisan's workshop.

The benefits of this collaboration will be the promotion of master craftsmen whose art is inextricably linked to our country, in an effort to support cultural heritage, the visibility of Cypriot craftsmanship, opportunities for Cypriot master craftsmen for new collaborations and the inclusion in the European Charter of Cyprus Craftsmanship.

Further information is available on the Homo Faber NextGen website.
