On the occasion of the celebration of the International Volunteer Blood Donor Day, the Blood Centre of the Ministry of Health wishes to express its heartfelt gratitude to all volunteer blood donors for their selfless contribution.

Cyprus, demonstrating once again the philanthropic feelings and the sense of responsibility and humanitarianism that distinguishes its citizens, is among the few countries where the needs for blood derivatives are fully covered by voluntary unpaid blood donation. This fact ranks Cyprus among the countries with the highest percentage of voluntary blood donors as a proportion of the population.

In the year 2023, with a total of 86,231 blood donors, the Blood Centre collected 71,798 bottles of blood, increasing the collection rate by 3.63%, thus managing to meet the increasing needs for blood derivatives.

In conclusion, we would like to thank once again our blood donors and at the same time invite our healthy fellow citizens, who are not blood donors, to join the family of volunteer blood donors.

A blood donation takes less than 30 minutes, but one bottle of blood can save up to three lives.
