[PIO] An online lecture by Holocaust survivor Mr. Moshe Aetlion was held for high school and technical school students

The Directorate of Secondary General Education of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth, in cooperation with the Embassy of Israel in Cyprus and the Center for Holocaust Research and Teaching in Jerusalem - Yad Vashem, held yesterday, February 2, 2022, an online lecture by Holocaust survivor Mr. The event was introduced by the Programme Coordinator at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth, Dr. Antonia Loizou, while the President of the House of Representatives, Mrs. Anita Demetriou, the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth, Mr. Prodromos Prodromou, the Ambassador of Israel to Cyprus Mr. Oren Anolik and the representative of Yad Vashem Ms. Lea Micha.

Subsequently, the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth, Mr Prodromos Prodromou, in a taped message, after thanking Mr. Moshe Aelion for his presence, he pointed out the need to recall through actions, such as this online lecture, the merciless pogrom unleashed by the Nazis against the Jewish population of Europe throughout the period of World War II, in order to honour the victims of these unspeakable acts, but also to be constantly vigilant against similar behaviour in the present and in the future.

Afterwards, the Ambassador of Israel to Cyprus Mr. Oren Anolik in his speech referred to the importance of teaching the Holocaust as a part of the global historical consciousness and to the efforts made by the Jewish state to preserve all these testimonies of Holocaust survivors, which undoubtedly constitute the most "living" and reliable sources of that dark period.

In the main part of the event, Holocaust survivor Mr. Moshe Aelyon gave a moving account of his experiences of his stay in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp and the dramatic moments he experienced in the death camps and extermination marches organized by the Nazis.

The lecture was attended by teachers, students from 65 schools all over Cyprus. This was followed by a discussion during which Mr Aelion answered questions from the students and those present.
