The first National Strategy and National Action Plan for Autism 2024-2028 was approved today, 10 April 2024, by the Council of Ministers. It includes 53 actions under seven thematic pillars, following the life course of a child and adult with autism.
The State Ministry of Social Welfare is coordinating the National Strategy, while other ministries such as the Ministries of Labour, Health, Education, Transport and Finance are participating in the National Committee.
The thematic pillars relate to research, early detection and diagnosis, health and therapeutic intervention, early child and family intervention, education, social protection and independent living, work, participation in leisure, culture and society.
The Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Ms Marilena Evangelou, in her statements after the meeting of the Council of Ministers, said: "The aim is to fulfil the rights of persons with autism as equal members of society and to improve their quality of life, within the framework of the United Nations (UN) Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, by providing services and support to children and adults with autism for social participation and integration to the maximum extent possible in all aspects and stages of their lives."
He added that the importance of the National Strategy is also "the possibility of bringing together all autism services under the umbrella of the National Strategy, for better coordination of actions and holistic response to challenges."
Ms. Evangelou pointed out that the immediate next step is the convergence of the National Committee itself and the establishment of permanent sub-committees, coordinated by the Department of Social Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities, and the systematic cooperation of all stakeholders.
Referring to the Action Plan, the Deputy Minister noted, inter alia, the creation of a National Electronic Platform for Autism, as well as programmes related to information, upgrading of services and social inclusion. He also announced the organization of a National Conference on Autism next autumn.
