The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs. Piero Fassino, entitled "Call for the return of Varosha to its lawful inhabitants", with the only dissenting votes being cast by the Turkish MPs, members of the CSE. Particular praise is expressed for the decisive intervention of MP George Loukaides, member of the CSTO's Political Affairs and Democracy Committee, and the other members of the Cypriot delegation, which resulted in the inclusion for the first time in a text of an international organisation, in the form of amendments tabled by its members, of important references to the Cyprus problem. In particular, the terms 'invasion' and 'occupation' are used for the first time and are linked to the Cyprus problem, but also to the specific issue of the return of Famagusta to its lawful inhabitants.
Specifically on the issue of Famagusta, the adopted resolution makes clear reference to Turkey's illegal actions in the enclosed area of Famagusta and the need to revoke them, since, as noted, such actions hamper the prospect of resuming talks on the basis of the agreed UN framework for a solution of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with one sovereignty and one international personality.
