Your Excellency Mr President of the Republic of Cyprus,

Dear fellow MPs,

Honourable gentlemen chairmen and board members of the Nicosia Water Supply Council,
Honourable Mr. Director of the Council,
Ladies and gentlemen,
"Water first!" More timely than ever is the wise observation of Thales of Milesius. Especially nowadays, when Europe is becoming dangerously thirsty and the planet is sending out danger signals due to the climate crisis. Water is undoubtedly an essential and precious element for human existence and life in all its forms. The European Parliament's resolution of 5 October 2022 on access to water as a human right stresses, inter alia, that it is a common good that must be provided without interruption in sufficient quantities of good quality and calls on States to strengthen the promotion of water supply and sanitation as essential public services for all.

Despite the scarce water resources of our island, the Nicosia Water Supply Council (WSC) through responsible management, continuous modernization and the dedication of its staff has ensured throughout its years of operation the uninterrupted supply of water to the residents of Nicosia. Water intended for domestic consumption must meet certain quality standards, therefore, in addition to the analyses carried out by the state services, SYL, always with the consumer in mind, carries out additional tests. Given the decline in water supplies, the modern systems implemented by SYL reduce losses from the network and contribute to the efficient management of available water.
This is a modern organisation which, by entering the new digital era, digitising accounts, implementing online payments and automating data collection, has managed to become sustainable and upgrade its services. With its up-to-date website and social media presence, it is always in touch with consumers, earning their trust.

It is an honour for me to be among you to celebrate the seventy years of operation and contribution of SYL, and I thank you warmly for the invitation. For the work done over the years and the valuable contribution to society, I warmly congratulate the Board of Directors, the management and the employees, who have managed to make SYL an organisation with a vision of optimal water management, an organisation of vital importance and a model in providing services to the Cypriot citizen. Its invaluable contribution is recognized not only by society, but also by the state, which stands by its side and supports it every step of the way.
SYL is currently facing a new crossroads. With the completion of the reform of local government and the transformation of the organization into the Water Supply Department of the Nicosia District Municipality, I am confident that it will continue unhindered on its successful path and will have the opportunity to implement more innovations.
As the Speaker of the House of Representatives, I wish to express our appreciation for the course and contribution of SYL to date, but also to assure you that we will be by your side in the next steps for its continued and successful operation. By supporting the upgrading of such beneficial organisations in our country, we create conditions and prospects for development and prosperity at all levels.
I warmly congratulate you and wish the organisation every success in the future, looking forward to an equally productive course.
