It is with great pleasure that I participate in the presentation of the book by Dr Argyris Argyriou entitled "The Doctors of Limassol". It is an honour to be here tonight and to honour, on behalf of the State, on behalf of the Government, the contribution of pioneering doctors who each in their own way served the public, society, Limassol and our country as a whole.
The renowned doctor, friend Argyris Argyriou, dedicates the book very rightly, very aptly, to his father, the late doctor Amerikos Argyriou, whom we remember with gratitude for his many years of service.
Before referring to the book, let me say a few words about the doctor and man Argyris Argyriou. As I am sure you all know, he is a scientist with outstanding experience and dedication in the field of paediatrics, which he serves with great love.
Since 2006 he has been Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Centre for Preventive Paediatrics, a successful Centre of which we are proud and which is the exclusive provider of the National Screening Programmes in Cyprus. He is at the same time Vice President of the Cyprus Paediatric Society, Secretary of the Board of Directors of the "Theotokos" Foundation and President of the Association of Friends of the "Diastasis" Cultural Group. All these multifaceted qualities of dear Argyris indicate the breadth of his interests, but more importantly they reveal the reserves of contribution he possesses.
The distinguished career of the author and his enthusiasm for the history of Limassol - because the book is about medical science in our country, the local history of Limassol and our country - are highlighted with interest through the pages of the book, which offers a unique experience to its readers and also provides interesting facts about the course of medicine in Cyprus.
The book is divided into 13 chapters and in each of them the author develops in a special and artful way what he wishes to convey to the reader. He makes reference to the first doctors who worked in Limassol in the 19th and 20th centuries, while he also refers to the most important milestones of medicine in Limassol and the first appearances of doctors and medical institutions in the city. In the fourth chapter of the book, the author describes the old hospitals of Limassol, starting with the Infirmary which opened around 1830.
At the same time, reading the book of his friend Argyris, the reader, through a comprehensive approach to the field of radiology in Limassol, comes across important, unknown to the general public, information about a field which is a station of medicine for the whole of Cyprus.
At the same time, reading the book of his friend Argyris, the reader, through a comprehensive approach to the field of radiology in Limassol, comes across important, unknown to the general public, information about a field which is a station of medicine for the whole of Cyprus. At the same time, through the writings of Argyris, the reader has the opportunity to get to know the pioneering doctors of Limassol and Cyprus, who left their imprint on medical science, especially after the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus.
In the ninth chapter the author deals with the Limassol doctors who excelled in other disciplines besides medicine - obviously he identifies with all of them, because his authorship besides medicine also identifies with all those mentioned in the book - such as Fine Arts, literature, politics, sports. A very interesting element is the fact that the author does not fail to mention in the book the Turkish Cypriot doctors of Limassol, who had a remarkable presence in the history of medicine, especially during the English occupation. Special reference is also made to the doctors of Limassol who offered their services to their country and the nation at large during the various historical milestones, from the First World War until recently. Special mention is made of the contribution of Limassol doctors during the 1955-1959 Liberation Struggle and the Turkish invasion of 1974. Reference is also made to the "Volunteer Doctors", who offered and offer their services pro bono wherever there is a need, in various countries in Africa, Asia and even Europe.
One of the chapters of his book is dedicated to the Limassol doctors who contributed to the medical industry, with Dr Andreas Pitta, founder of Medochemie, as a typical example.
The book we are presenting tonight is a reference point. It adds to the sources of information both on the history of our country and on the development of an important aspect of medical science in our country.
To Dr. Argyriou I wish health and the strength to give us, in addition to his contribution to medicine, other examples of his authorship.
