It is with great pleasure that I am here today in your beautiful community, inaugurating an important infrastructure project that aims, among other things, to upgrade and improve the sense of security of residents and visitors, local and foreign.
Pissouri is a popular destination, not only during the summer season, but all year round, as it has the unique privilege of combining the mountain with the sea. This makes it all the more necessary to ensure law and order both in the community and in the wider area, since the station covers other communities as well. In this context, the presence of the Police Force in the area, in a tourist resort such as Pissouri, is not only necessary, but must be cooperative, preventive and when necessary - I wish it were not necessary - repressive.
Today we inaugurate yet another project to improve and upgrade the building infrastructure of the Cyprus Police. A project, which - started by the previous Government and I must acknowledge the important work that has been done, the decisions that have been taken - in addition to what I have just mentioned, will undoubtedly contribute both to enhancing the operational competence and responsiveness of the Police and to strengthening the sense of security of the residents.
I am well aware that members of Police Stations in general based in our rural communities are highly respected and valued by the residents of the areas they police, more so than in towns and cities, and police-public relations are friendlier. Citizens have more confidence in the Police, since its members are able to be aware of many aspects of their daily lives, as well as the general problems and challenges they face.
It is therefore with great pleasure and satisfaction that we inaugurate the new, modern Pissouri Police Station, at a total cost of more than 370,000 euros.
It is therefore with great pleasure and satisfaction that we inaugurate the new, modern Pissouri Police Station, at a total cost of more than 370,000 euros. The building in which the old Primary School used to operate was granted to the Police by the Community. I know that many children attended and many of those present have unique memories of this place. I am sure that many of you would have preferred that the building had been put to another use. But when the repairs for its utilization began a few years ago, various ideas were heard, but the most important one was considered to be its utilization as a Police Station and I would like to take this opportunity to mention that whatever needs arise, precisely because of this donation made by you, we are here as a government to utilize [THE OPPORTUNITY] with a positive approach.
So, we look forward to hearing your requests. I have documented the problem you referred to [FOR FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO THOSE WHOSE HOMES WERE DAMAGED BY SUBSIDENCE IN THE LAKES AREA], three Government Ministers had visited the community on my instructions and I am following up. You have set a new dimension. Let us move on to the assessment of financial assistance from the state to all those affected and on the basis of factual data we can talk more specifically and more generally about other needs in the area.
If in the agreement that was made there is a Fire Station in the area, as a state we have to respond. If we do not respond to what we sign up for, we should not expect anyone else to respond.
I was also recently at the Police Day, on the occasion of the Saint Peace Day and I will not tire of repeating it, ensuring public order and strengthening the sense of security of the citizens of our country is one of the basic obligations of the state, it is the cornerstone of a modern state, a state of law that has the obligation to defend and safeguard in practice the human rights of citizens and democratic institutions in general. It is our obligation to ensure that our country and its citizens are and feel safe and this is a key priority for our Government.
Particularly in this period, a difficult period where geopolitical developments in the region are creating new challenges in the areas of security, our Police is not limited to its role when it first started with the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus. Today the challenges are much greater, we have new forms and practices of committing crimes that threaten social cohesion and affect the daily life and quality of life of our citizens. We have something that is of particular concern for the quality of life, especially of our young people, drugs. We have terrorism, illegal immigration, domestic violence. I cannot think of any problem in which the police are not involved.
I would like to express my thanks to our police, to all the officers of the force for the work they do and to assure them that we are at their side to upgrade, to modernise the means at their disposal so that they can carry out their work. And the operation of a modern Police Station is part of the means and equipment that our Police must have.
Our goal is the gradual formation of a modern and flexible Police, which will be able to respond adequately and effectively, both preventively and suppressively, to the policing requirements of modern times, thus ensuring a high level of security in our country, which we as a state must offer.
I would like to address the members who will staff the Station.
Today you are officially receiving a modern Police Station, whose facilities ensure the appropriate working conditions for the performance of your multi-dimensional and demanding work. Having personally witnessed your high sense of social responsibility, your level of dedication to the work you do and your daily and tireless efforts, while you are easily the target of criticism, we are here today to assure you that we are on your side. The Government's efforts to upgrade services to the residents of our rural communities, the non-urban areas I should say, that will make your daily lives more comfortable, easier and safer, are continuous and uninterrupted, and are for me personally a key priority of our administration.
