It is a distinct pleasure and a special honour for me to attend tonight the Ceremonial Session of the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts, the leading intellectual institution in our country.
In our time, a time of countless challenges both at home and abroad, the promotion of intellectual creation is the main means of ensuring the progress and development of a country. After all, intellectual culture, scientific practice and artistic awakening are nowadays prerequisites for the existence of an advanced state and a prosperous society. And this is precisely your role, the role of the Academy.
The Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts has assumed this important role. As Cyprus' highest intellectual institution in the Sciences, Letters and Arts, and as the home of the most distinguished Cypriot scientists, scholars and artists, it has undertaken to promote intellectual and scientific creation and to translate it into actions and works.
The Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts was founded with the main objective of "positioning" our country in its rightful place in contemporary international intellectual and cultural life, through its representation in international academy organisations. At the same time, with its multifaceted and multilevel action, the Academy aims, among other things, to recognize, promote and reward excellence, to fully support Education, to preserve and promote our intellectual and cultural heritage, to promote and develop research and innovation, and to provide scientifically validated knowledge and information for finding solutions to today's social challenges and needs. Since its establishment, we have been pleased to observe the efforts made and the progress made towards the achievement of the objectives I have mentioned.
We have previously had a very productive discussion, we agreed on four priority areas, health, education, digital transformation and our country's green transition, in which we will work with the Academy to achieve these objectives that are above all relevant to Cypriot society.
We expect as a state and as a society that the Academy, through its action and work, will contribute both to the development of research and educational programmes in our country and to the cooperation with research and academic institutions abroad for the promotion of similar worthy programmes. In this way, it will shed light on areas of concern not only to the scientific community but above all to citizens and their daily lives.
As a state, we look forward to the development of an integrated framework of cooperation with the Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts - it was one of the issues we discussed today - in order to jointly promote new ideas and innovative scientific practices that will address the ever-increasing challenges at the academic, scientific, learning and social levels.

For my part, I would like to take this opportunity today to assure you that both I personally and the Government will be an active supporter and companion of the Academy in its efforts to actively and effectively participate and contribute to the whole spectrum of our society. It is, after all, one of the goals set by the Academy through the promotion and utilization of the accomplished activity of our compatriots of renown.
This year the Academy rightly awards the Award of the Republic of Cyprus 2023 to the dear Kyriakos Athanasiou, the distinguished Cypriot mechanical engineer specializing in Biomedical Engineering.
This year the Academy rightly awards the Award of the Republic of Cyprus 2023 to the dear Kyriakos Athanasiou, the distinguished Cypriot mechanical engineer specializing in Biomedical Engineering. I will suffice to mention that the distinguished professor, dear Kyriakos, has contributed substantially to the improvement of global health in three different fields of science, tissue engineering, biomaterials and regenerative medicine. Congratulations Kyriakos, you make us proud. Valentinos Charalambous and Professor Christos Hadjichristodoulou.
Mr. Valentinos Charalambous, through his recognized work, has greatly enhanced the development of the art of ceramics on an international level. Likewise, Professor Christos Hadjichristodoulou, through his active involvement in the field of medical science, contributed to the promotion of public health and, in particular, epidemiology. Congratulations to both of them.
At the same time, Ioanna Abraham's artistic activity in the development of the art of dance and her distinguished professional career at the Vienna State Ballet fully justify the award of the Young Artist's Prize, which the Academy has also decided to establish this year. Congratulations Johanna.
I will not go further into the achievements of the honorees and the honoree since this is something we will all have the opportunity to learn about and feel proud of through the rationale of their award which will follow in the following.
However, let me conclude by addressing you, dear Ioanna, Kyriakos, Valentine and Christos, by warmly congratulating you on behalf of the state and the Cypriot people. Your action honours first and foremost you yourselves but, undoubtedly, it also honours our country. You are the worthy ambassadors of the human, capable potential that we have as a country, what I often call the most important asset of this country, being an example and a model for the new generation of our country.
