The award I just received is on behalf of the previous administration, it's on behalf of the executive because we have to recognize the important work that was done by the previous government. Of course the challenge is ahead of us, it is before us to implement the Local Government Reform which is one of the priorities of the Government.
It is with great pleasure that I attend tonight's event of the Nicosia Water Supply Council, which is about to complete 70 years of service and service to the residents of the capital.
Throughout this long course, the Nicosia Water Supply Council has managed, through painstaking work, target-orientation and the adoption of modern technologies, to renew and rationalise the capital's water supply network, providing high quality services, which is the main objective of its mission. Your contribution, the Council's contribution to a city such as Nicosia, which is chronically affected by drought and drought, due to its geographical location, is of particular importance.
In Nicosia, where every drop of water counts, we are pleased to see that the leakage rate is significantly reduced and water projects of substance, such as the construction of new modern water reservoirs, which the capital city so badly needs, are being implemented.
I am confident that the excellent work will be continued by the new District Agency, which will be established in July 2024 on the basis of the relevant law as passed by the House of Representatives. The Nicosia Water Supply Council, based on the law, will be transformed into a water supply department of the Nicosia District Self-Government Organisation with the administrative boundaries of the whole District. And therefore the new challenge will be the continuation of the important project of extending the water supply network of the urban and rural areas. The Nicosia Water Supply Council has become a modern organisation that with dedication, knowledge, extroversion and good management can meet any challenges, and there will certainly be challenges, in this rapidly changing operational and business environment.
In this context, I would like to express on behalf of the State my sincere thanks both to the Interim Coordination Council, which was set up to complete the reform, and to the project manager of the reform, the Nicosia District Local Government Organisation, for the progress made so far in completing the reform.
The Government has prioritised the completion of the Local Government Reform as one of its top priorities as, among other things, we believe that this reform will best serve the needs of our citizens. The whole course of work to date allows us to be optimistic that by July 2024 its implementation will be completed, especially because we are at this event, in relation to the Nicosia District Local Government Organisation.
In closing, I would like to congratulate the Board of Directors, the Management and of course the Council staff for their excellent work and very satisfactory results that make us all really proud. I am absolutely sure that, by demonstrating the same zeal, responsibility and consistency, the Nicosia Water Supply Board will continue to be a reference point and achieve successes.
Let me assure you, following the reports of the Minister of Interior and the Minister of Agriculture, that from the Government's side we will continue to stand by your side, substantially supporting your efforts and providing all possible assistance in your important mission.
We therefore continue this journey for even more years of service, setting new development plans, new projects and a clear vision, always in the direction of better serving the needs of the citizen, which at the end of the day is the main priority for all of us.
