It is with great pleasure that I participate in tonight's event, the presentation of the new book by the historian and diplomat George George. It is a great honour for me to welcome this event, since, among many other reasons, Mr. George is for me a valuable friend, advisor and collaborator, not only in my early academic years but also today in my capacity as President of the Republic of Cyprus.

Although he does not like to talk about it, George Georgis has been a pioneering visionary in the development of cultural diplomacy, which is among the priorities of the Deputy Minister of Culture and which we want to promote even more. He was the initiator for the establishment of the House of Cyprus in Athens, of which he was the Director for many years and made it one of the most important cultural centres in the Greek capital. Among other things, as a professor at the University of Cyprus, he undertook the research project "Eurodactylus" in the framework of which six major volumes on the political, historical and cultural relations of Cyprus with Spain, Denmark, Hungary, Poland and Ireland were published, while a special volume was published during the first Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union.I hope that the programme will be revived again on the occasion of the new Presidency of the Council of the European Union by the Republic of Cyprus in the first half of 2026.

Mr. Georgi's interests also extend to the study of the Cypriot movement, Greek-Turkish relations in the 19th century, Seferis, the Greek Revolution and Ioannis Kapodistrias. His books on the Unitarian Referenda and the 1821 fighter Nikolaos Theseus have recently been published in Cyprus, while the book we have the honour to present tonight, the product of many years of research, studies and highlights one of the most shocking and tragic aspects of the Greek Revolution, the drama of prisoners and missing persons. I am sure that what prompted Mr Georgi to deal with this dimension is the fact that this year marks 50 years since the Turkish invasion and ongoing occupation and certainly the evidence that emerged through this tragic experience led him to study and we have this book we are presenting tonight.

Dear friend George, thank you very much for the honour of inviting me to address tonight's event. I am sure that the journey offered by the book we are honoured to present tonight will be a long one, along with yours, which is admittedly a journey of research, service and dedication to our land.
