It is with great pleasure that I participate tonight in this modest event in honour of my friend Marios Kouloumas, Honorary President of the Cyprus Federation of Patients' Associations (CPAA).
Both the Government over the years, the State and I personally, recognise and honour the work and dedication of those who fight for the rights and care of patients, and Marios in this effort, without any exaggeration, is a protagonist.
At the initiative of the Board of Directors of the OSAK, he is rightly honoured tonight for his long and uninterrupted contribution to the Cypriot patient. We owe every honorary recognition to the man Marios, because as is well known, our friend Marios was diagnosed with a chronic condition at an early age, and this development has not prevented him for 23 years from being an active volunteer in the patient movement, but from being a protagonist. And this, my friend Marios, not only honours you greatly, but also shows the quality of your character.
Marios was, among others, President of the Antirheumatic Association for a number of years, as well as a member of a number of organisations in Cyprus and abroad. On 23 June 2014, he was elected President of the OSAA, a position he held for 3 consecutive terms, until 31 May 2023.
During his tenure, a critical period for the health sector in Cyprus, the OSAA gave significant testimony to the substantial work it is doing. Tirelessly and zealously, it addressed and promoted the resolution of a number of issues and problems concerning the improvement of the health services offered. He was also one of the pioneers and ardent supporters in the not so easy battle to promote the YESY which is one of the most important social reforms of our country.
And tonight a promise to all of you, a promise to the OASC, a promise to Mario, this government will not only ensure, but will further strengthen, especially towards strengthening the services offered, which when we talk about health is the key issue.
Marios Kouloumas is a tireless fighter for the defence of patients' rights, who cares substantially and sincerely for the well-meaning interests of our fellow sufferers and is distinguished for his selflessness, insight, unmistakable ethics and diligence.
Tonight's event is therefore dedicated to an important man, a strong voice, a strong patient-focused personality.
Dear Mario, please accept my warmest congratulations. I am sure that you will continue to fight from any post and always be in the best interest of the patient, the human being. My wish is that your work will always prosper for the benefit of society and our country.
Congratulations also to those who contributed to the organization of tonight's event, especially the President and the Members of the Board of Directors of OSAK.
I am confident in the successful continuation of your work and I want you to know that in the Presidency you have a close friend and close partner and as I have repeatedly stated publicly, the health sector along with Education are the most important sectors of our governance.
