From organisations focused on the conservation and display of their collections, they are becoming more active entities designed to attract many kinds of audiences, with different needs, specificities and expectations.
Modern museums are focusing on their audiences and looking for ways to engage them. They realise that the exhibits themselves are only part of the visitor experience, with technology, educational programmes and more generally interactivity and experience being key elements of a complete museum experience.
Museums are also being asked to play a broad research role with modern laboratories and other research and documentation spaces. Moreover, audiences are not only looking for contact with the past or art, but a more holistic experience that includes activities such as dining, buying products, attending various artistic events and much more.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
The need for these changes became apparent several years ago. However, the first substantial step was taken in May 2017 with the completion of the International Architectural Competition for the construction of the new Cyprus Museum and the award of the first prize to the architect Theoni Xanthi and her associates.
The result is the creation of a Museum, a jewel of the Mediterranean and the European area, a landmark building, which will be a reference point both for its architecture and for the experience it will offer and which we have no doubt will welcome thousands of visitors a day with enormous benefits for the capital.
The Cyprus Museum will also be combined with free admission, a policy which has been approved by the Council of Ministers and is part of the "Museums for All" policy and has already been implemented in all the Museums of the Department of Antiquities, following the example of well-known museums around the world such as that of the British Museum in London.
Today, here we are, moving one step closer to our goal: we are pleased to announce the announcement of the tender for the Contract for the Construction of the New Cyprus Museum Project. This is yet another announcement by the President of the Republic that is now on its way to being implemented, demonstrating in practice the support of the Government and the President of the Republic personally in the field of Culture. A project which the President of the Republic had set among his priorities with personal continuous supervision and monitoring of its maturation.
In addition to the enormous importance of the implementation of this project for culture, the construction of the new Cyprus Museum is part of the broader strategy of the State, and is expected to contribute to the promotion of other related sectors, such as cultural tourism.
The tender period will run until 1 July 2022 and the contract is expected to be signed around the end of 2022. Construction work on the project will be completed within 42 months from the signing of the contract, with a period of 18 months after completion of the construction work to complete the museographic work, including the transport and installation of the exhibits. The total duration for the delivery of the project is 60 months.
The new Cyprus Museum will be built on an area of 40,000 square meters and its budget amounts to 121 million 380 thousand euros, which is the highest amount in the Budget of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works for 2022 and confirms the Government's willingness to invest in the cultural sector.
The Museum will be built in an important area of Nicosia, on the site of the old General Hospital, almost opposite the existing Cyprus Museum. In addition to the permanent exhibition spaces, which will house around 6,500 antiquities, it will include spaces for temporary exhibitions, educational programmes, conservation workshops, antiquities storage, a library, an amphitheatre, offices and extensive landscaping. In addition, the new Cyprus Museum project includes the creation of a public square, which will mark and underline the new, improved image of the urban centre.
The completion of the study for the tender of the Contract for the construction of the new Cyprus Museum reflects the collective effort of architects, archaeologists, museologists, conservators and other specialists. Until the new Cyprus Museum opens its doors to its first visitors, the above team of experts will continue to work with the relevant government departments to complete the project, under the coordination of the Department of Public Works, in cooperation with the Department of Antiquities.
The new Cyprus Museum seeks to create all the conditions for today's visitors to be able to see the ancient world of the island with fresh eyes and build their own direct relationship with our tangible and intangible cultural heritage.
