It is with great pleasure and satisfaction that I welcome today's acceptance ceremony of the nine modern vehicles of the Fire Service.
Undoubtedly, the phenomenon of climate change, which is now visible to all of us, and the increase in the frequency and intensity of fires that have occurred in recent years, not only in our country but also in countries which in the past did not face particular problems from the outbreak of fires, make it imperative to continuously evaluate and strengthen the sector of fire protection, prevention, response and suppression of fires in the country. This will be achieved both through the strengthening and upgrading of the logistical infrastructure and equipment of the fire-fighting services, and through the introduction of technological systems and means of surveillance, detection and early detection of forest and forestry fires.
Unfortunately, the cost of the fires that have occurred in our country in recent years has been enormous, even costing human lives, while the losses have been incalculable for the environment, agricultural activities, the economy and the lives of all of us.
With this in mind, the Ministry of Justice and Public Order has set high among its priorities the continuous strengthening and upgrading of the Fire Service, both in terms of its logistical infrastructure and the fire-fighting fleet and equipment it has at its disposal.
The nine vehicles we are taking delivery of today will contribute both to improving the level of response and to strengthening the suppressive capacity and capability of the Fire Service at the operational level.
The full autonomy of the Fire Service has now created new standards and higher expectations, which should certainly be met.
I am sure that the upgrading and modernization of the Fire Service, including the modernization of its equipment and means, combined with the continuous training and the high sense of responsibility of its members, will contribute in this direction, with the ultimate goal of creating a modern Service that can respond to any incident, however difficult it may be, at any time, seven days a week, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Already, the Fire Service has demonstrated significant work and its response with great success to difficult incidents that we have had to deal with as a country, as well as its participation in missions abroad, largely outline the high level of professional training and dedication of its members.
I will conclude by assuring you that the State's effort to further strengthen and modernise the motorised and other equipment and means of the Fire Service will be continuous.
As the Chief Fire Marshal has already mentioned, there are plans to receive by 2026 a significant number of new fire-fighting vehicles of various types.
