It is a pleasure to be in a room full of young people today, tomorrow's creators of a better society than the one we are delivering.

And yes, we are optimistic that the future of this country will be better, because the new generation has vision and goals. You have vision and goals for a country that is whole and not divided, free and not semi-divided.

I am sure that the sense of pride for our wounded homeland in these places you are now serving is strong, as is the sense of responsibility to civil society.

My Dears,

I will not speak to you formally today, I will speak to you as an ordinary citizen and as a driver taking my car to go for a drive, to do some shopping or to take my family out to dinner.

My responsibility to my own life, to my family and to my fellow human beings begins the moment I put my hands on the wheel. That is where everyone's responsibility begins, as well as the questions:

  1. Am I ready to drive according to the rules of the Highway Code?
  2. Am I driving at the right speed, taking all appropriate measures?
  3. Am I armed with foresight and reflexes at the right moment?
  4. Do I know when to say no, not to drive because I am sleepy or drunk?

These are the questions we all need to ask when we take the wheel, when we take to the roads, when we have to manage the unexpected that surely awaits us.

Acquiring road awareness and safety is a matter of culture, it is a matter of education, it is a matter of duty and it is everyone's business. It is part of our everyday life and an integral part of protecting the ultimate good, life itself.

Individual responsibility is the greatest of all and must be demonstrated by each and every one of us.

Despite all the efforts made and the actions developed, it is regrettable to note that citizens' compliance with the Highway Code remains problematic.

For the first 4 months of 2024, my dears, we have had eight fatal collisions with 11 of our fellow citizens losing their lives. Parents, children, brothers, sisters, spouses, people next door, co-workers who also started at home just by gripping the steering wheel.

I invite you all to become the drivers of your own lives with responsibility and respect. Let these coming Holy Days of Easter be a time of reflection and introspection for all of us individually, family and collectively.

At this point and in conclusion, I would like to congratulate once again the National Guard, the Cyprus Police and the independent bodies that contribute to education and continuous awareness-raising on road safety issues.

I would like to take this opportunity to say that today's event coincides with the Speed Awareness and Policing Week, while also taking place at a pan-European level as part of the Cyprus Police's cooperation with the European Road Police Network ROADPOL.

Thank you very much and Happy Easter to all of you.
