We have gathered here today in order to congratulate the 178 new members of the Cyprus Police who have successfully concluded the 3-year training programme, and it is a great pleasure to have you here among us on this special occasion. Distinguished guests allow me now to continue in Greek.

It is with great pleasure and satisfaction that I address today the graduation ceremony of the police cadets of the basic training series 153, 154 and 155.

Today essentially marks the beginning of the professional careers of 178 new members of the Police, who were recruited on April 5, 2021, and who, having successfully completed all stages of their training, are now active officers, ready to fulfill their mission with competence and efficiency and to fully meet the increased obligations and requirements of the profession.

In recent years, a great effort has been made to substantially strengthen police personnel so that they are able to meet the real security requirements of modern times. A total of eight other basic training courses, consisting of 512 police cadets, continue to attend or are expected to join the training programmes and gradually complete all stages and actively join the service.

The State has entrusted the Cyprus Police with ensuring the highly critical area of public order and security and the protection of human life. Given the rise, both internationally and nationally, of unprecedented challenges in the areas of security, including asymmetric threats, the expectations of citizens and their demand for security and law and order are rightly becoming ever greater, which makes the role of the police officer, the role of all of you, even more important and at the same time more challenging.

Listening to these expectations of civil society, the Government of Nicos Christodoulides has placed high on its priorities the implementation of the restructuring and reorganization of the Police, in order to enhance the access of all its officers to education and continuous training, in order to improve their professionalism and develop competencies and skills, so that they are able to listen to society and act proactively and adaptively.

Ensuring public order and internal security as key pillars of a modern Rule of Law, as well as strengthening and enhancing the sense of security of the citizens of our country, is a top priority for the Ministry of Justice and Public Order, but also for me personally and the Government in general.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Amidst an ever-changing socio-political environment, rapid technological developments and increased challenges, which help in the development of new forms and practices of committing crimes, we are all called upon to effectively address every form of crime that plagues today's society, such as drugs, trafficking in persons, offences committed against children, such as child pornography, gender and domestic violence, terrorism, illegal immigration and, in general, any form of crime that directly affects the citizens of our country, affecting their daily lives, social cohesion and quality of life.

To achieve this, we need society as an ally and not as an opponent. We need citizens alongside and not against the police. This will be achieved by strengthening citizens' sense of security and regaining their trust in the Police and the Institutions in general.

Dear new members of the Cyprus Police,

Be proud of your choice to join and serve the Police Corps. I am sure that this choice was made with full awareness of the responsibility and the need for continuous service to society and citizens that the profession of a police officer entails.

I therefore invite you to honour this choice with your actions and to be worthy of the honour due to a member of the Cyprus Police.

At the same time, I would like to assure you that the State and I personally will always be at the side of the Police Leadership, actively supporting its work. The aim and conviction of all of us is the gradual formation of a Police Force, of which, on the one hand, its members will feel proud of the Corps in which they serve and, on the other hand, the citizens will consider the Police as their ally, as their protector and as a support in their daily lives.

I wish you all a good professional career, which should always be accompanied by honesty, sincerity, transparency and meritocracy, principles and values which should be the beacon of your decisions and actions, for the protection of the citizen, for the good of the new generation, for the good of our country.

In conclusion, I would like to reiterate my warm congratulations to the 178 new police officers who are today completing all stages of their basic training.

In particular, I would like to congratulate the top ranking Police Officers who placed first and second from each series, as well as the members who placed first and second in the annual competition of the Rewarded Police Cup and its Basic Crime Detection Training Program held during the 2023-2024 Academic Year.

I would be remiss if I did not express my congratulations and thanks to the Director and teaching staff, visiting lecturers and academic associates of the Police Academy, for the great effort they make to ensure that the police training provided is of a high academic and professional standard.

You can be sure that the already high level of academic and professional training offered by the Police Academy will not only continue, but will be upgraded even more, since through training we will be able to achieve the main goal we have set as a State, which is none other than providing the best possible security to our citizens, with full respect for human rights and basic freedoms.

Thank you.
