I would first like to thank you for organizing today's press conference, which gives us the opportunity to review the actions that are underway or expected to be promoted in the immediate future and aim at the socio-economic strengthening and revitalization of Nicosia within the walls.

The multicultural character of Nicosia requires the creation of a vibrant community within the walls of Nicosia, highlighting and strengthening its historical character, but also its modern European existence.

The Ministry of Interior, through the Department of Town and Country Planning and the Directorate of Policy, European Affairs, Housing Policy and Human Resources, implements a series of Plans, which complement each other in order to achieve a comprehensive approach and effective intervention.

Briefly, I would like to refer to the actions implemented by the Ministry of Interior concerning the following. The 2nd call of the Scheme was announced on 31 July 2023. [*]Sponsorship Scheme for Student Residences / Student Rooms, with a total budget of €15 million, funded through the Recovery and Resilience Plan. The revised guide to the Plan is awaiting approval by the State Aid Controller and will subsequently be taken to Cabinet for approval. [*]Housing Plan for the Walled City of Nicosia, implemented in March 2023, with a budget of €5 million. [*]Digitisation of Architectural Heritage in the Walled City of Nicosia, a project through which 525 buildings were assessed, with the aim of declaring the most remarkable ones listed, in addition to the existing 800. [*]Urban Incentives and Regulations for the Walled City of Nicosia.

On all the above, we will have the opportunity to be informed in more detail by the Planning and Zoning Department.

Friends,

With the implementation of the Plans I mentioned above, we aspire to transform the historic centre into a modern place of business and economic activity, to ensure that existing residents stay and attract new ones, achieving its revitalisation.

By highlighting the unique historical and architectural character of the area, as an integral part of the history and culture of Cyprus, we seek the social and economic upgrading of the area. The effort started by the previous government and enriched by the current one, focuses on axes such as increasing the number of visitors to the walled city of Nicosia, creating new jobs and improving the built environment by contributing to the circular economy and green development.

The plan for the revitalization of the walled city of Nicosia is ambitious and dynamic.

The plan for the revitalization of the walled city of Nicosia is ambitious and dynamic. I am particularly pleased that this project is believed and supported with knowledge and experience by our partners such as the Ministry of Finance, the General Directorate of Development and of course the Nicosia Municipality. Allow me also to thank the Director of the Planning and Zoning Department and the Head of the Department of Policy, European Affairs, Housing Policy and Human Resources and their teams for their commitment to the implementation of the Plans.

Dear Mayor, dear members of the Nicosia City Council,

I congratulate you for your vision and will to implement social actions that protect, promote and promote the historic centre of Nicosia. In view of the implementation of the Local Government Reform, the integrated strategy that we are jointly implementing will improve the quality of life of the residents of the area and strengthen the competitiveness of Nicosia, offering visitors, local and foreign, a unique visitor experience.

I assure you that the Government, and in particular the Ministry of Interior, will stand by your side to ensure the successful implementation of your plan. Thank you.
