Let me first express my sincere thanks to the President and members of the Community Council for inviting me to join you at today's event and inaugurate the Community Park of Agia Varvara. A project, the completion of which residents have been awaiting for several years, and which will undoubtedly enhance their quality of life.
The project, work on which began in 2013 on state-owned land leased to the Community Council, was constructed in five phases, including the creation of football and basketball pitches, a playground, parking area, recreation hall and other landscaping projects. Projects, worth a total of €300,000, were funded by the Home Office (€248,000), the Community Council, St. Barbara's expatriates in London and other friends of the community.
The above infrastructure makes up an integrated, modern and multifunctional park, offering residents of all ages in the Community and the surrounding areas a space for sport and recreation, a green core, a meeting and socialising point for residents and visitors to the area. In particular, the football and basketball pitches, the playground and the recreation hall create spaces for citizens, especially our children and young people, to engage in sport and culture in a healthy way.
Friends,
We have before us the huge task of reforming local government. In about a month, local communities are entering a new era, with prospects for their upgrading and modernization. The flexibility given to local authorities by the new framework contributes to the promotion and implementation of projects that highlight the specific character of local communities and contribute to a better quality of service for citizens.
I am confident that the merger from 1 July of the Community of Agia Varvara with the Communities of Analionta, Kotsiati, Lythrodontas, Mathiatis, Margi and Sias will have beneficial effects both for the Service Cluster as a single unit and for each Community individually. Located geographically just a few kilometres away from the urban centre, the seven Communities will now have the opportunity, through proper staffing, guidance and a rational way of operating, to experience even greater growth through the implementation of projects and essential infrastructure, with the aim of retaining the existing population and attracting new ones.
I want to assure you that the Government in general and the Ministry of Interior Services in particular, remain constantly at your side and work to facilitate the realization of your goals and vision. After all, it is our common goal that your initiatives succeed, as this translates into an improvement in the daily lives of citizens, who are at the heart of our policies.
Dear Friends,
In conclusion, I would like to congratulate the Community Council of Agia Varvara for its initiative to provide the residents of the Community with modern infrastructure, which revitalises the area and creates conditions for its development.
Thank you.
