I am very happy to be among you today and I would like to thank you, dear Mayor, for the invitation to inaugurate the European History Park. A project that is being handed over to the citizens of Aradippou, but also of the whole of Cyprus, at a milestone moment for our country, coinciding with the celebrations for the 20th anniversary of Cyprus' accession to the great European family.
The accession of Cyprus to the European Union in 2004 is one of the most important successes of our country since its foundation in 1960 and was made possible after long and persistent efforts by all the governments of the country. Since then, the benefits we enjoy as Cypriot European citizens are manifold and have contributed to the positive transformation of our country. The common European values are put into practice and have a substantial impact in a wide range of areas, ranging from the economy, politics and society.
With the contribution and guidance of the European Union, our country has the opportunity, among other things, to implement development projects, to use funding to build infrastructure and to participate in training and education programmes. By joining the large European family, we are giving all Cypriot citizens the right to move, study, work and live in any other member state of the Union. We have seen and continue to see the practical application of the fundamental European principle of solidarity in a multitude of major and serious issues, such as the economic crisis, the pandemic, the migration issue.
Of particular importance is the help and support we receive from the European Union in relation to our national issue. The Cyprus problem is recognised by our partners as a European issue par excellence, and as Cyprus, we invest in the cooperation and contribution of the European Union for its final settlement. Moreover, the final settlement of the Cyprus problem will ensure the rights of all legal residents of the Republic of Cyprus in a reunited, modern and European homeland, in the same way that citizens of the other Member States of the European Union enjoy their freedoms and rights.
Our 20-year European course fills us with pride and optimism and offers the young people of our country a perspective for their future in a stronger and more resilient European Union.
I am pleased to note that the Aradippou Municipality recognizes the importance of our country's presence in the European family, as well as the value of this common course with 26 other states for the future of our young people and the development of our society.
I am pleased to note that the Aradippou Municipality recognizes the importance of our country's presence in the European family, as well as the value of this common course with 26 other states for the future of our young people and the development of our society. The inauguration of the European History Park today confirms this.
With its initiative to create the Park, which we are inaugurating today, Aradippou Municipality is a pioneer. Not only because it has chosen to promote the history and values of the European Union in a unique artistic way, but also because it has given the Park an educational character, giving primarily to students, but also to all visitors to the Park, the opportunity to learn and acquire knowledge about the other Member States of the Union.
Dear Mayor, dear members of the City Council,
We are only a few weeks away from the start of the ambitious reform of local government. Our ambition through the new form of Local Government Authorities is to create for local communities the conditions for development and improvement. From 1 July, Local Authorities will have greater flexibility to promote and implement projects that promote culture and the special character of communities.
In this context, investments in infrastructure and projects that will offer education and culture not only improve the quality of life of citizens, but also enhance the tourism product of areas such as Aradippou, located in the heart of a Province that has experienced tremendous growth in recent years, thanks to the vision of Larnaca's local community leaders.
Dear friends,
I would like to congratulate you on your initiative to create in your city another nucleus for meeting and socializing. The existence of healthy spaces where our young people can mingle and, at the same time, enrich their knowledge is a priority for the central State and I am glad that in this we find the Local Authorities as supporters.
Thank you.
