Ladies and gentlemen

It is with great pleasure that I - on behalf of the President of the Republic of Cyprus - welcome today's ceremony organised by the Ambulance Service to honour its staff.

In life few things are as gratifying as the genuine recognition of the contribution and especially the saving of human life, and it is very important that the Ambulance Directorate has decided to honour with this small and modest ceremony the people whose special deeds have contributed to the promotion of the successful operation of the Ambulance Directorate.

Effective emergency response is a matter of paramount importance to the credibility of any health care system, and it is the right of every citizen to have state protection against any sudden threat to their lives.

The provision of emergency health care - especially in the management of people in the pre-hospital setting - is a real challenge for the entire team involved in emergency response such as nurses, ambulance drivers, rescuers, who are often faced with the particular, peculiar and rapidly changing needs towards the rescue and health care provided to sufferers.

Friends

Today, more than ever, the ongoing and planned dissemination of knowledge in the sensitive health sector takes on a new dimension and is fundamental in the effort to ensure quality in all areas of service provision. This is, after all, the main objective of the Ministry of Health: The continuous improvement and provision of health services to all citizens of the Republic, so that they can enjoy the highest possible quality of life.

The need for permanent preparedness, high training and excellent organisation of staff - specialised in pre-hospital and emergency health care - should be a health policy of every country and should be included in the organisation of the design of health services.

The Ambulance Service has shown that it has made leaps and bounds in the field of emergency pre-hospital treatment, which was recognised by all citizens during the management of the covid -19 pandemic, and more generally in the management of all emergencies.

The reduction in response time, the increase in ambulance stations, the adequacy of specialized equipment and resources, ongoing training and quality service delivery made our Service stand out internationally and be certified with two ISOs.

It is clear that all members of the Ambulance Service have contributed to this success, and for this very reason this teamwork is recognised by all, not only within Cyprus, but also abroad.

I therefore warmly congratulate the Ambulance Service for this initiative, to institutionalize and establish the idea of awarding the rescuers.

I congratulate your efforts, both for the organization of this ceremony, the undivided zeal with which you carry out your profession, and for the efforts you make to ensure that training in the field of emergency health care in the pre-hospital setting is continuous.

Thank you.
