It is with great honour and pleasure that I was invited to greet on behalf of the President of the Republic of Cyprus this great charity event organised by the Pancyprian Association of Cancer Patients and Friends, which has been supporting for years the people who struggle daily with cancer. The Association is always here to emphasize its support to all our fellow human beings who are going through their own difficult struggle, it is here to send to everyone the message of hope and social solidarity to our fellow sufferers.

I wish every success to the work of the Pancyprian Association of Cancer Patients and Friends, which over time, through the noble goals it sets and the actions it undertakes, comes to make us even more aware of the issues related to cancer.

In this context, I would like to highlight the importance of health as a concept that is not only limited to physical well-being, but is also closely linked to our mental and social well-being. Love, support and solidarity are essential elements of a balanced life, especially when it comes to our fellow human beings suffering from any form of cancer.

It is up to us to support those struggling with this disease, and I am proud that the Ministry of Health is actively contributing to this effort. In particular, the Ministry of Health, following the key principles of the European Cancer Strategy, is implementing such health policies that aim to prevent and effectively treat the disease. In particular, with regard to the population-based programme for breast cancer, it has been expanded age-wise and covers women aged 45-74 years old nationwide. At the same time, the Ministry of Health is rolling out other population programmes such as colorectal cancer screening, prostate cancer and cervical cancer screening. In addition, the preventive program of vaccination of children for the human papillomavirus - HPV in both sexes is being implemented.

Another important effort of the Ministry is the preparation of the framework law for the provision of palliative care services to suffering patients. While the creation of the National Cancer Institute is also being promoted, which, among other things, will have the responsibility to proceed with the evaluation, accreditation and organization of all oncology services, focusing on the main pillars of action of prevention, early diagnosis - treatment, research as outlined in the National Cancer Strategy.

Dear friends,

The provision of the full range of health services is an obligation of the state towards cancer patients and their families. Your contribution, particularly through the reintegration programmes you offer, but also through your continued provision of supportive care to patients and their families, helps to strengthen the efforts of the Ministry of Health. For this reason, in recognition of your work, the Ministry of Health supports you by supporting you financially through its sponsorship.

Thank you very much for your contribution and your support in this effort. The Ministry of Health deeply appreciates you and will continue to support your efforts in every way possible. Our focus always remains the citizen and our concern is his/her well-being.
