It is with great pleasure that I address today, on behalf of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides, the opening of the Scientific Workshop, the 1st Joint Meeting organized by the Cardiac Surgery Working Group of the Cyprus Society of Cardiology and the Valvular Disease Working Group of the Hellenic Society of Cardiology.
Collaboration between medical communities outside the borders of each country is an important factor and can initiate progress in the treatment of different diseases. I am confident that your meeting today is a similar example, will be a source of inspiration and will lead to new strategies that will improve the quality of care for patients with cardiovascular diseases. At the same time, today's joint meeting between the two Scientific Groups of Cyprus and Greece contributes to the strengthening of the national ties that unite our countries over time. Our ties with Greece in all fields remain unbreakable since antiquity.
Dear friends,
Valvular diseases are a major cause of mortality and morbidity both in Cyprus and in most developed countries. The therapeutic management of valvular diseases, especially cardiac surgery and interventional cardiology, constitute an evolving and highly valued area of medical science. These are surgical procedures performed by a team of highly trained, experienced and skilled personnel. Their timely treatment is very important in order to prevent any irreversible damage to the functionality of the heart.
The State aims to continuously improve the services provided to our suffering citizens. Our main concern is to improve the quality of life of our fellow citizens. The introduction of the YESY on June 1, 2019, opened new horizons in the provision of quality health care to our fellow citizens, offering them universal access to high quality health services. Given the fact that cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death, both in our country and in Europe, the Ministry of Health has appointed a Committee of Specialists to which cases that are not treated within the GHS are referred and, based on the "Financial Assistance Scheme for Services Not Offered in the Public Sector", are referred to centres abroad if necessary.

Let me congratulate and thank the organisers of today's workshop and express my gratitude for their contribution to our collective effort to ensure maximum benefit for Cypriot patients.
I wish a pleasant stay to our Greek brothers and sisters who at every opportunity show their practical interest and support to our country, and to all of you, have a productive meeting.
I close with the wish that today's Workshop will become a permanent institution in the medical events in the field of Interventional Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery.
The Ministry of Health is at your side.
