It is with great pleasure that I address today the "World Kidney Day Conference", which is organized by the Pancyprian Association of Friends of Kidney Patients, in collaboration with the Cyprus University of Technology and the Cyprus Nurses and Midwives Association, and is under the auspices of the Ministry of Health.

As we all know, the second Thursday of every March has been established as World Kidney Day. The aim of this initiative is to raise public awareness of the importance of kidney health and Chronic Kidney Disease.

According to experts, Chronic Kidney Disease without proper care can be fatal. In fact, it is predicted that mortality from Kidney Disease will be the fifth leading cause of death by 2040.

Kidney transplantation remains the treatment of choice for end-stage chronic kidney disease with very high success rates. Since 1986, when the first kidney transplantation was performed in Cyprus, great progress has been made in the field of transplantation in our country. To mention for example the establishment of the Transplantation Council, the software system for organ allocation from post-mortem donors and the creation of the National Registry of Potential Post-Mortem Donors.

Friends,

The theme of World Kidney Day 2024 is: "Kidney Health for All: Promoting equity of access to care and best pharmaceutical practice". The Department of Health is constantly vigilant in adopting and putting into practice the necessary prevention and treatment policies to ensure that equally all patients with Chronic Kidney Disease have access to appropriate care and treatment. Our aim is to ensure transparency in the field of transplantation, promote equality in transplantation opportunities and optimal allocation of rare transplants for maximum sustainability in the long term.

In conclusion, I would like to note that it is important to organise scientific events that contribute to information, exchange of views and constructive debate on health issues. I would therefore like to thank the distinguished speakers for their contribution to the realization of this conference.

I would also like to congratulate the Pancyprian Association of Friends of Kidney Patients, the Cyprus University of Technology, the Cyprus Nurses and Midwives Association and all those who contributed to the excellent organization, as well as to wish every success to the proceedings of your conference.
