It is with great pleasure that I address today's festive event on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences of the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT).

The World Health Organization, in a recent definition, defines the field of rehabilitation as "the restoration of a person's functional abilities as close as possible to the normal state after injury, illness or disease, and addressing deficits that cannot be remedied by medical care". This is invariably a broad field, dealing with the physical, psychological and environmental needs of the patient.

Therefore, holistic treatment of the patient and the success of rehabilitation goals requires the close collaboration of all health professionals.

With the establishment of the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences of the CERD 10 years ago and the operation of the Department of Speech and Language Therapy, the presence of the CERD in the field of Rehabilitation has been established and is a constant value in the field of health care. Speech and Language Therapists play an important role in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of people with speech disorders.

The addition of the Occupational Therapy programme, which will be offered to students of the Department in the near future, as well as the expansion of the Department in the coming years with new programmes in Physiotherapy and Social Work, are expected to provide the academic background and the necessary support in order to provide high quality services to the whole population.

Friends,

The Ministry of Health has set as a high priority the continuous improvement of the services provided to people in need of physical rehabilitation interventions.

In this context, following a study of the existing institutional framework for the provision of physical rehabilitation services, a revised Bill entitled: "The Law on Rehabilitation and Rehabilitation Centres (Establishment, Operation and Control)". The aim is to regulate the establishment of the terms and conditions for the licensing and legal operation of the above-mentioned Centres, as well as to establish rules for their control and the manner of their operation.

The Bill comes to fill the gap in ensuring the provision of high quality recovery and rehabilitation services and regulating their licensing, in view of the integration of these services into the General Health System, which has been a constant demand of society and an urgent scientific need.

We expect that the discussion at the level of the Health Committee of the House of Representatives will be completed immediately, so that the bill can be brought to the plenary session of the House of Representatives for a vote.

Dear all,

I take this opportunity today to assure you that both I personally and the Services of the Ministry in general will be at your side offering full support to your education and research efforts.

I really must congratulate and thank, in particular, the organisers of today's event and wish from the bottom of my heart every success in the objectives that have been set, which are none other than to ensure the provision of high quality health services in the field of care and rehabilitation.
