It is with great pleasure that I welcome the launch of a collaborative research project on the reform of Cyprus' tax framework, in the context of a holistic approach, including the modernisation of the legislative framework. A project to which we as the Government attach great importance because, as you know, the provisions and regulations of a tax system are crucial for the development of the economy and ensuring its sustainability, through the transparent and fairer distribution of the tax burden.

Tax reform has been a constant demand of most professional bodies and employers' and trade unions' organisations, as well as other organised bodies in recent years. The Government's intention is that the modernised framework should take into account the modern economic model and its evolutionary prospects, while being transparent, simplified and governed by minimal bureaucracy.

It should be business-friendly and at the same time socially equitable, as well as meeting European standards and principles, aiming at reducing tax evasion and avoidance and enhancing tax fairness.

As we have already announced, the project has been entrusted to the Economic Research Centre of the University of Cyprus, which is staffed by experienced academics and professional experts in both tax and legal matters, and is the most appropriate body to work objectively, with the ultimate goal of achieving the best possible outcome for the Cypriot economy.

On this occasion, I invite you all to submit, in the context of the consultations that will be held, your views and suggestions as to the tax model that Cyprus can follow or even specific suggestions and proposals that will add value to the work of reform.

In conclusion, I would like to thank you for your presence and attention today and to assure you that the Government will respond to the request for the greater good of Cyprus.
