It is with great pleasure that I address today's press conference for the presentation of the educational programme "Bullying and Acceptance of Diversity". The cooperation with institutions such as the Christina A. Apostolou" and "Hope for Children - CRC Policy Center" strengthens the goal of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth to promote a safe learning environment for our students.
Non-acceptance of diversity and school bullying violate rights such as protection and care, education, respect for privacy, participation and freedom of expression. As a Ministry, we have made it a priority to implement violence prevention and empowerment programmes for children from pre-school age. At the same time, we promote policies to protect children from all forms of violence and to strengthen mutual respect, so that everyone can enjoy the benefits of education without discrimination and intimidation.
We make efforts to ensure that no child is targeted, intimidated or marginalised. The systematic implementation of the policy of zero tolerance of both racism and bullying contributes to the creation of a school environment in which every child feels safe, regardless of his or her characteristics. Through the structures of the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute, we provide support to school units for the implementation of preventive programmes, policies and actions aimed at reducing and addressing the phenomena of racism, bullying and school violence in general. We welcome the initiative of the "Christina A. Apostolou" and the organization "Hope for Children - CRC Policy Center" for conducting the prevention training program "Bullying and acceptance of diversity". The aim of the experiential workshops included in the Program is to create a culture of acceptance of diversity, with the ultimate goal of reducing and eliminating bullying.
Particularly useful is the tool of film education used in the above workshops. Starting from short films that deal with this topic and the accompanying lesson plans, children are trained experientially to acquire the appropriate social skills to create and improve their social self, to develop social skills and relationships and to accept and manage diversity and interculturalism, in accordance with the Comprehensive Health Education Programme. Through this action, cinema demonstrates how it can educate, raise awareness and awaken children in a creative way.
