It is with great pleasure that I am here today at Pallouriotissa Primary School C΄, together with my colleague Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry Mr. George Papanastasiou, on the occasion of World Consumer Day, which was established and is celebrated on 15 March each year. The celebration of World Consumer Day is an opportunity to strengthen the protection of the consumer and his/her rights and to strengthen actions to assert them.
The role of the consumer is decisive, since every time he/she chooses products or services, he/she can positively influence their price and quality, as well as the terms, conditions and environment of the market. Consequently, the consumer has an obligation to know how to choose, reject and consume wisely.
Dear children,
You too are consumers, since you spend money on your needs and desires. It is therefore important, as consumers, to act properly and responsibly. Judge the information you receive and make wise consumer decisions. Develop critical thinking and contribute to the creation of a fairer and more sustainable society. Be informed about your rights and responsibilities. Become consumers who know what they need, who choose wisely and not hastily, who reject products, who compare price and quality, who know how to make complaints and claim their rights. Through specific educational programmes, and particularly through the Health Education course, we aim to encourage sustainable consumption, consumer awareness, creativity and autonomy. With the decisive intervention of your teachers, whom I thank for their important contribution to the whole project, we expect you to acquire all the necessary skills to become wise consumers and useful citizens of tomorrow. Through your lessons and the educational programmes mentioned above, you will have the opportunity to discuss these issues with your teachers, your classmates and to learn even more.
Today in your school, on the occasion of World Consumer Day, you will have the opportunity to attend presentations on consumer protection issues given by officials from the Consumer Protection Service. I would like to thank both these officials and the Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry himself for the honour of being with us today and for the opportunity to learn even more about this issue.
