It is with great emotion that I welcome you to today's modest event, which is organized in order to hand over 50 laptop computers to the students attending the occupied schools of Rizokarpaso during the school year 2022-23 and to the students of the occupied community attending institutions of higher education during the same academic year.

This generous offer of the Limassol School Ephorate and the Limassol POPED is in line with the plans of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth to accelerate the digital transformation in education and to further develop the digital skills of our children. And our children in Rizokarpaso are not only no exception, but are at the heart of our plans.

Dear children from Rizokarpaso,

On behalf of the State, I express our appreciation and admiration, because despite the problems and adverse conditions you face, you, together with your parents and teachers, continue to remain rooted in the land of your ancestors, waiting for the time of liberation. You are deprived of things that other children of your age take for granted and you undergo personal sacrifices, continuing the struggle for survival and enduring with fortitude the problems of the occupation. You are not enjoying basic human rights, including the right to education, because of the obstacles that the occupying power has put in front of you over time.

It is precisely for this reason that I travelled to Brussels a few days ago, where I attended a meeting of the European Parliament's Committee on Education and Culture. During the session, I highlighted in a very strong way the problems that the occupation regime has been creating over time for the smooth functioning of our occupied schools and the obstacles that it interferes with your right to full access to education. The response I have had from the MEP(s) has been very positive and I expect that they will mobilise to lift any restrictions until the day of the reunification of our island.

The Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, bearing all this in mind, always puts our occupied schools at the top of its priorities and strives to continuously provide you and your teachers with the necessary equipment to facilitate, as far as possible, the process of teaching and learning. We stand by you in your daily struggle and see to it that the occupation does not deprive you of the opportunities and possibilities to develop to the fullest extent possible the full range of your abilities. I particularly thank and congratulate them and your teachers who are striving, in difficult circumstances, to carry out their pedagogical work to the full.

In conclusion, after assuring you once again that the State will continue to stand by you, I express my sincere thanks to the Limassol School Ephorate and to the Limassol POPED for this generous offer. I also express my warm thanks to the President and members of the Rizokarpaso School Ephorate for their continued support to our occupied schools, as well as for the organization of today's event.
