It is with great pleasure that I address the Award Ceremony of the students who excelled in the Writing Competition on the promotion of gender equality in the choice of studies and profession, and the competition for the new logo of the Interdepartmental Commission for Gender Equality of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth.

Gender equality is a core value of the European Union and a fundamental principle of the European Pillar of Social Rights. In this context, in order to preserve this high value, the European Union has adopted a Strategy for Gender Equality for the period 2020-2025. This Strategy foresees, on the one hand, to ensure gender equality and, on the other hand, to eliminate gender violence, gender discrimination and structural inequality between women and men.

As the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, we attach particular importance to the promotion of this Strategy by implementing policies and actions included in the Governance Programme. By adopting a people-centred approach, in the context of the modern and inclusive school we seek, we aim to promote the principles, values and skills that distinguish democratic and critical thinking citizens. Among other things, I note the implementation, under the supervision of the Commissioner for Gender Equality, whom I congratulate for the whole action of the National Strategy for the years 2024-2026, corresponding to the European one, in which our Ministry participates.

Through our policies, we seek to further enrich our educational programmes with actions that promote empathy, gender equality, respect for diversity, as well as the prevention and treatment of bullying phenomena. In addition, actions are promoted that empower schools and foster a strong preventive attitude towards incidents of any discrimination, through the implementation of the Anti-Racism Policy and the Bullying Prevention and Management Policy.

At the same time, the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, recognizing the importance of gender equality, operates an Interdepartmental Committee for the Promotion of Gender Equality and the Elimination of Stereotypes and Gender Discrimination in Education and through the relevant Action Plan, which it prepares every three years, attempts to contribute to the prevention and management of gender-based racism.

The great interest and the increased participation of children in the competitions organised fill us with optimism. The arguments put forward in their texts, expressing their own position in relation to the claim of the existence of "male and female" professions, as well as the effort to highlight gender equality and social justice in their projects make us confident that we can count on the consolidation of these values in our society.

In conclusion, I would like to thank the Commission for Gender Equality in Employment and Vocational Education and the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance for their cooperation and for their diverse support of the Competition. I would also like to thank the members of the Evaluation Committees of the Competition, the teachers who worked and inspired the children to be creative, as well as the Interdepartmental Committee for Gender Equality of our Ministry and the Pedagogical Institute for the coordination of the whole action.

I warmly congratulate you for your efforts. Based on your valuable opinions and targeted positions, let us each and every one of us individually and together, through our example, become a shield for the protection of equality and mutual respect. We, as a State and as a Ministry, must continue to work with zeal and dedication in this direction.
