It is with great emotion and joy that I am with you today at Camp "Elias Papakyriakou", at the graduation ceremony of the 2023 ESSO Soldiers.

Having received the required training, after a long, demanding and arduous period, during which a creative course was followed, today with this modest ceremony we officially welcome the new members of the National Guard Militia, ready to offer their services to their country.

I would like, first of all, to address the families of the new MPs.

First of all, I would like to address the families of the new MPs. Expressing my great satisfaction, I convey to you my sincere congratulations and warm thanks.

I am sure that the realization of your children's goal is absolutely linked and closely intertwined with the upbringing, interest, support, care, love and education that you have generously offered them so far all these years.

Be proud of your children. We are even prouder of them for hosting them for their military service.

Young soldiers,

Today's ceremony is the culmination of your long effort and at the same time the reward for the arduous training you have undergone from your enlistment in the National Guard until today.

Your graduation opens a new page in your life and in your military career.

It is also a springboard for new goals, new challenges and new constructive experiences that will make you capable fighters, ready to offer your best to the National Guard and our country in general.

You are therefore invited, from today, to assume the responsibility of the extremely important task of the Militia.

You assume the special duties of guarding law and discipline in the troops.

Emphasize and faithfully observe the motto of the Militia. The triad of words "Law-Tax-Discipline" should be for you the unwavering code that will characterize the remainder of your military service.

Apply and demand the application of the law.

"Nothing differs from the laws," the great philosopher Aristotle teaches us.

That is, not applying the laws is the same as not having laws.

To this end, you must become very well versed in the regulations governing the military and the state in general.

Bear in mind that for laws to be beneficial, they must be properly observed and applied. Acquire conscientious discipline. Be humane and exude seriousness, modesty and responsibility.

Discipline is a valuable collection of supplies and tools on the road to progress and success.

You, by the mission of your unit, ought to be a model of a disciplined and responsible soldier.

Set high goals. Pursue development and progress.

Continue with the same zeal, the same will and the same dedication to train under the guidance of your superiors.

I take this opportunity at this point to express my sincere congratulations to the Military Commander, the Commander of the Training Centre and the instructors, who throughout this period, with professionalism and responsibility, have warmly embraced the young soldiers and provided them with the necessary knowledge that will make them capable fighters and Soldiers.

Ladies and gentlemen,

We are going through a very difficult period, during which the prolonged and illegal Turkish occupation and the provocativeness of Ankara, the emergence of new forms of hybrid warfare, unpredictable geopolitical upheavals due to the protracted war in Ukraine and the recent rapidly evolving military conflict in Israel, require from us constant and utmost readiness and vigilance.

We stand ready to respond to any security and defense requirement requested of us.

As the Department of Defense, we are called upon to continue the effort to upgrade the operational capabilities of the National Guard.

With steady steps we will continue the course we have charted for the modernization and strengthening of our Armed Forces.

We must do this seriously and responsibly if we truly wish the National Guard to continue to carry out its mission as the main defender of the security, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus.

Young Soldiers,

In this context, taking into account that our personnel are the spearhead of our effort, I call upon you to continue with the same optimism, enthusiasm and interest to contribute to the troops and our country.

Your formal induction into the Militia rightly fills you with pride and provides you with strength for the future.

Be proud of the uniform and the badge you received today.

Be proud of your service in the Militia and the National Guard.

Be proud of your service in the Militia and the National Guard.

I congratulate you once again on your success and wish you all health and a productive remainder of your service.

Good and rewarding service.

Thank you.
