It is with great pleasure that I am with you today for the inauguration of the Christmas Village in Kalopanagiotis. Christmas is a great celebration of Christianity, reminding us of the miracle of the birth of the God-Man and the beginning of a new era, full of giving and love. For the third consecutive year, Kalopanagiotis is present in this institution, putting its own unique touch.
Kalopanagiotis is a village that combines religious monuments, traditional architecture and thermal springs with a peaceful, picturesque natural environment. The entrance to the village prepares the visitor for the cultural treasures that are intricately hidden in the narrow alleys, as well as for the hospitality of the people of this land.
The monastery of Agios Ioannis Lampadistis, which is the union of three different churches, those of Agios Heraclidios, Agios Ioannis Lampadistis and the Akathistos Hymn, is a unique monument of cultural heritage for the whole of Cyprus.
The monastery of Agios Ioannis Lampadistis, which is the union of three different churches, those of Agios Heraclidios, Agios Ioannis Lampadistis and the Akathistos Hymn, is a unique monument of cultural heritage for the whole of Cyprus. The monastery flourished during the Byzantine, Frankish (1191-1489) and Venetian (1489-1571) periods. The picturesque nature of the monastery combined with the sanctity of the site has been an attraction for believers for many years, making Kalopanagiotis an important destination. The traditional architecture found in the village takes us on an imaginary journey back in time, focusing on another era when the rhythms were different.
In Kalopanagiotis, due to the favourable climate, many plants are already cultivated, resulting in an abundance of high quality local agricultural products. Deciduous fruit trees, olives and vines characterize the area and provide the raw materials for the production of traditional products such as marmalades, soutzioukos, pálouse, wine and zivania. Honey of the highest nutritional value is also produced here. I encourage you to taste these products on the occasion of your visit to the Christmas Village.
Friends,
Being here today, I assure you that both in the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment and in all government departments, we are well aware of the challenges of life in the countryside and the benefits of preserving its vitality and cultural identity. These elements bring added value to the quality of life of local people, but are also attractions for visitors. For this reason, our Ministry has always been a supporter of every effort by residents, organised associations and other rural stakeholders to address the issues facing our rural areas.
It is also no coincidence that the Common Agricultural Policy, at European level, recognising the multifunctionality of the countryside, allocates a large part of the Union's total budget, up to 40%, to its support and development. Our Ministry and the Government of Nikos Christodoulides use both the financial tools, legislative regulations and mechanisms offered by the European Union, as well as national resources, structures and services of the state to improve the quality of life in the countryside.
In conclusion, I would like to thank the Kalopanayotis Community Council for the invitation, as well as to congratulate the organizers for the excellent organization of the Christmas Village.
