I am particularly pleased to be here with you today at the Workshop on "Promoting the Circular Economy in Hotel Facilities". A workshop that focuses on the effective promotion of the circular economy in the tourism sector through the hotel industry.
As you know, the whole effort is part of the Recovery and Resilience Plan and aims to enhance the competitiveness and resilience of hotel businesses, and to consolidate and implement the circular economy, with the ultimate goal of adopting a sustainable and resilient business model.
As is known, the implementation of the measure, as the whole effort is called, is carried out by the Federation of Employers and Industrialists (OEB) which is the Implementing Agency and with the cooperation of the Deputy Ministry of Tourism.
Our participation in the whole effort belongs to the broader context of our commitment to enhance sustainable and sustainable development in the tourism sector.
I would say that it is admittedly evident that there is now a need to make only targeted investments in the tourism sector, investments that are necessary for the protection of the planet and the well-being of people.
In order for tourism to continue to be a strong pillar in our country, in order for it to continue to contribute to the economy and the labour market, it must become resilient and, of course, its competitiveness index must be constantly upgraded. At the same time, taking action to protect our environment and our planet should be consolidated.
The concept of the circular economy is a response to the conscious aim of sustainable development. Until now, the economy has mainly operated according to the 'take-make-dispose' model, a linear model in which each product inevitably reaches the 'end of its useful life' and leads to overconsumption of precious resources.
The transformation of the economy from a linear to a "circular" economy is an urgent need for our country, which has, moreover, undertaken the corresponding commitments together with the other Member States of the European Union.
The measure "Promotion of the Circular Economy in Hotel Establishments" aims to promote and consolidate the circular economy in our country's hotel establishments through the provision of advisory services.
The measure "Promotion of the Circular Economy in Hotel Establishments" aims to promote and consolidate the circular economy in our country's hotel establishments through the provision of advisory services. The integration of the circular economy in hotel establishments is essential to enhance the competitiveness and resilience of the tourism sector. It includes practices such as material recycling, energy saving and waste reduction.
This approach helps both to protect the environment and reduce the operating costs of hotels and at the same time improves the image of tourism businesses.
Furthermore, a key objective of the measure is to consolidate the philosophy of the circular economy which seeks to change the way users think about the use of raw materials, while teaching participants how to respect the environment and what is produced from the earth.
The tourism sector, although one of the most important sectors of economic activity in the EU, is considered responsible for the production of a large amount of waste and overconsumption of raw materials, including energy.
Through the redesign of products and services, the circular economy seeks to keep a product in perfect working order for a long period of time, reducing the amount of waste, while creating new opportunities to reuse raw materials from waste treatment.
The 50 hotel businesses that have applied, and this is very encouraging, to participate in the Measure will benefit significantly from training, diagnostic assessment, business coaching, monitoring and support services. [*]Acquiring the necessary equipment to create new products and services on the basis of circular practices. [*]Compliance with the existing legislative framework for the implementation of the circular economy at Cypriot and European level. [*]Access to the Sharing and Exchange Platform that enables hotel sector businesses to share equipment and facilities. [*]Support for the creation of Sustainable and Circular Tourism Products, gaining a competitive advantage at national and international level. [/LIST]
Ladies and Gentlemen,
We are facing great challenges for the next day of our planet, for the next day of the Mediterranean, which is no doubt most affected by climate change, but also great challenges for our country.
As a government, we have made an electoral commitment both to build a resilient economy and to promote sustainable development.
By implementing actions such as this one, I believe that we are strengthening the competitiveness of the hotel industry, while at the same time helping to establish a culture that leads us carefully and in a coordinated way to the green transition.
