It is with great emotion and satisfaction that I am here tonight, on the historic stage of the National Theatre of Greece, to declare with you the opening of the Cypriot Theatre Week, which is co-organised for the first time this year by the Deputy Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Cyprus and the Cyprus Centre of the International Theatre Institute, with the support of the House of Cyprus in Athens.

The establishment of the Week of Cypriot Theatre marks for the Deputy Ministry of Culture the beginning of a systematic effort to promote and enhance the visibility of Cypriot theatrical creation outside the narrow geographical boundaries of the country, and in the context of implementing our cultural diplomacy. Our aim is to establish channels of cultural exchange, dialogue and communication between Cyprus' contemporary artistic creation and the international artistic landscape. These values characterize the consistent strategy of extroversion that we are planning at the Ministry of Culture, both for the theatre sector and for all sectors of artistic creation.

At the current juncture, the free theatre sector in Cyprus is going through a period of intense reconfiguration, opening up to new forms and forms of expression, renewal of repertoire, the pushing of ideas, freedom from stereotypes and, above all, the promotion of talents in the field. Samples of this artistic fermentation taking place in our country will be enjoyed during this week.

Allow me to repeat, as it is important to be heard in the place where we are tonight, the well-known and self-evident fact that Theatre, this magical and magnificent art form, was born here, in Athens, and from here began its journey throughout humanity. For this reason, I feel particularly touched that the Cypriot Theatre Week has found a hospitable and fitting home at the National Theatre, which I thank warmly for its hospitality.

I would also like to express my sincere thanks to all those who worked enthusiastically for the realization of the Week, from the Department of Contemporary Culture of the Ministry of State, the Cyprus Centre of the International Theatre Institute, and the House of Cyprus, wishing that many more such successful synergies will follow in the future.

I would especially like to thank the Minister of Culture of Greece, Dr. Lina Mendoni, who accepted my invitation and is with us tonight. Together we share ideals, ideas and plans for the future which I am sure will become reality.

Finally, I congratulate the real protagonists of the event, the performers of the three Cypriot plays for their participation and thank them for representing the contemporary cultural creation of our country here in the cradle of Western culture.

Good luck and good viewing!
