I am pleased to welcome tonight's event "Aragon and Cyprus", organised by the Library of the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) in collaboration with the Alliance Française Limassol and dedicated to the distinguished prose writer, poet and essayist Louis Aragon.
Louis Aragon, one of the most important figures of the twentieth century, shaped the contemporary culture of France through his literary work and political activity. At today's event, distinguished scholars will speak not only about him and his work, but also about his relationship with our country, since he visited Cyprus towards the end of his life and dedicated a part of his literary work to it. His relationship with the island is inextricably linked to the Cypriot writers Elli and Panikos Peonidis and is recorded through the documents of their personal archive, the digitization of which was undertaken by the Library of the CUT. The digitized archive will be exhibited for the first time to the Cypriot public and will be made available to the scientific community for study and use.
The Deputy Ministry of Culture and the Department of Contemporary Culture seek to strengthen cultural relations between Cyprus and France through actions that reinforce the already excellent and strong ties between our countries. At the same time, we support philanthropy through various projects and sponsorship programmes for the Support of Literary Activities, Grants for Translations of Works of Cypriot Writers from Greek into Foreign Languages, Purchase of Publications for the Enrichment of Cypriot and Foreign Libraries, and for the Promotion and Promotion of Cypriot Publications at International Book Exhibitions Abroad.
In closing, I would like to thank Mrs. Elli Peionidou for granting her and her late husband Panikos Peionidis' archive for digitization, trusting in the excellent know-how of the CUT. The valuable archive will be accessible to scholars and all interested parties, thus promoting their remarkable work. I would also like to congratulate the CUT Library and the Alliance Française Limassol for this fine initiative, which will highlight the relationship between Cyprus and France.
Thank you.
