The book, they say, is a powerful vehicle that can carry the human soul from end to end. It is the journey through the world of imagination and knowledge. A journey that can open its doors to new ideas and experiences that shape our thoughts, feelings and culture.
Cyprus has always been a bridge between cultures, business activities and cultural exchanges. It is for this reason that I consider events like today's extremely important, which aspire to make Cyprus an even more dynamic pole of cultural events at an international level.
The organization of the Limassol International Book Fair confirms its success for the second consecutive year, paving the way for its consolidation as an institution that will attract not only the local community, but also visitors from other parts of the world.
The aim of the Deputy Ministry of Culture is to be in constant contact with book professionals in an effort to listen to the needs of those involved in the production of books.
Activities related to authors, publishing organisations and bookshops are supported over time through the Funding Plans. The Deputy Ministry of Culture can finance events within the framework of the POLITISMOS Programme, while through other sponsorship projects it supports publishing production and the translation of literary works in Cyprus with the aim of promoting them abroad.
In addition, through contacts within the framework of this outward-looking policy, we aim at the dynamic participation of Cyprus in international publishing events. It is a milestone for us, after an absence of 15 years, the participation of Cyprus through the Cyprus Publishers Association in the Frankfurt International Book Fair, one of the most important events in the publishing world, which took place in mid-October. And certainly this participation will not be an isolated event. We will also proceed by supporting the presence of Cyprus in other major, international exhibitions in order to promote Cypriot publishing and, consequently, to promote our culture.
The production of books about a place is a key element of its identity and idiosyncrasy. In this context, I would like to pay tribute to the founders of the Limassol Book Fair and the team of organisers, as well as to the curators of the exhibition for this excellent project. Special thanks to the exhibitors, speakers, academics, publishers, authors and all those involved in this event thus contributing to the success of this book festival as well.
I wish the successes for the International Book Fair to be continuous and substantial, making it an intellectual beacon supporting education, progress and development of our society.
