I was pleased to accept the invitation to address a brief greeting at today's Cyta event, on the occasion of the operation of the fourth photovoltaic system in one of its buildings, this time at Cyta's headquarters here in Nicosia.
As Commissioner for the Environment, I welcome Cyta's substantial commitment to adopting the principles of sustainable development and to achieving its goal of energy self-sufficiency in the coming years. The use of Cyta's buildings to install the photovoltaic system as a priority, without having to alter the natural landscape by placing photovoltaic panels on the ground, is exemplary.
Cities and businesses must address the climate crisis in every possible way. Renewable energy is sustainable and has a low environmental footprint, making it key to the green transition. Unlike fossil fuel reserves, which will eventually run out, renewable energy sources such as solar energy offer a literally inexhaustible and clean alternative. By using renewable energy sources, we not only reduce our dependence on finite resources, but we also reduce the greenhouse gas emissions responsible for global warming and climate change.
In closing, I would like to congratulate Cyta for its vision and effort to become an example of sustainable development in our country and wish you good luck in this effort.
