First of all, I would like to convey my thanks to the Press and Information Office for hosting me for this press conference.
Today we are here to recognize and address two of the most pressing challenges of our time: the climate crisis and environmental degradation. Humanity is experiencing an ever-increasing amount of waste, which, if not managed rationally, can have devastating consequences for human health, climate and ecosystems.
We are facing the tragic consequences of the climate crisis and we must all seek and implement solutions to reduce waste and promote sustainable development. The piles of rubbish we see in many areas are just a symptom of a much bigger problem, of rampant consumerism, a mindset that needs to change.
Listening to the request of "Let's Do It! Cyprus 2023" to contribute to the annual clean-up campaign, we responded positively, as the Office of the Environment Commissioner has always done. To assist in the campaign, we have co-sponsored with the Fisheries and Marine Research Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, to co-organise the clean-up of the fishing shelter and Zygios beach on Sunday, 22 October, at 11am.The aim of this effort is to create the first joint volunteer clean-up team with the participation of the relevant departments. We would like to thank them for their participation.
Warm and special thanks are also due to the President of the Zygii Community Council, Mrs. Georgia Michael, and to the members of the Council, who actively support this effort.
Warm and special thanks are also due to the President of the Zygii Community Council, Mrs. Georgia Michael, and to the members of the Council, who actively support this effort. Without their help the organization of the event would have been impossible.
We should note that the President of the Republic responded positively to the invitation of our Office to His Excellency the President of the Republic Mr. Nicos Christodoulides to participate in this action and to give the impetus for the start of the weekly clean-up campaign of "Let's Do It Cyprus". We all understand that the participation of the President of the Republic himself in this action has its own symbolism, as it shows in the most practical way the Presidency's commitment to environmental protection.
The active involvement of the Office of the Environment Commissioner through the co-organization of the clean-up of the fishing shelter and Zygios beach aims to raise awareness of environmental challenges and to promote the cultivation of environmental awareness and action in every corner of Cyprus. Let's show that when we act as a whole, we can make a difference.
Thank you very much for being here. Let us move forward with determination in the work that awaits us.
