It is with great pleasure that I address today's conference, which will address issues related to the mental health of children and adolescents, adaptation to new data and the reform of mental health in our country.
I would like to congratulate the Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences of European University for organising this conference, as the ultimate aim is to highlight a very serious issue: It is imperative to invest in promoting the mental health of our children as they are the present and the future of every country.
The aim is to invest in the development of our children so that they are able to overcome normal tensions, painful situations and difficulties of life. To be ready to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow and to be useful citizens in society.
Unfortunately, the World Health Organization estimates that between 10 and 20 percent of adolescents worldwide experience mental health conditions, yet these remain under-diagnosed and under-treated. According to experts, if left untreated, these disorders can become more serious, affecting the psychosocial life of the individual, often continuing into adulthood with implications for people's health, professional and social lives.
The European Network of Commissioners for Children has recently called on all Member States to take the necessary measures to ensure the right of the child to the highest attainable standard of mental health, in accordance with the provisions of the United Nations Convention The Council of Europe's Strategy for the Rights of the Child 2022-2027, which seeks to develop inclusive and non-discriminatory health and education systems, includes among its priority pillars "ensuring the rights of the child in crisis and emergency situations".
Friends, valued colleagues,
When I took over the Ministry of Health, one of my goals was and is to work together in an era of new normal to achieve mental wellness, that is, to make mental health and well-being for all a priority starting with our children and adolescents, the future of our country. Health the most precious commodity we can have covers not only physical health, but also mental health.
With hard work and sensitivity, we must strengthen social cohesion, mitigate social inequalities and ensure for our children the best they deserve.
The non-negotiable asset of mental health must be protected and strengthened on a systematic basis, especially nowadays when children have experienced the multidimensional negative effects of the extreme phenomena that afflict humanity, wars, pandemics, crises, etc. With these thoughts, I would like to congratulate and thank once again European University for its important and high quality contribution to education, culture, health and economy. I also congratulate all those who have worked to make today's event possible and all those who are here to support its purpose and its message. Messages that with our own actions can be given with touches of optimism for a better tomorrow for all of us.
