The Counselling and Vocational Education Service (YSEA) of the Directorate of Secondary General Education (DME) of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth (MPEY), in cooperation with the Pancyprian Confederation of Associations of Parents' Associations of Public Secondary Schools, organized with great success on 9 and 10 December, from 11:00 to 18:00 at the Filoxenia Conference Centre in Nicosia, the Action "Careers. The World of the Labour Market and Professions".
At the beginning of the first day, 9 December 2023, Dr. Irene Rodosthenous, First Officer of Education and Head of the Counselling and Vocational Education Service of the Directorate of Secondary General Education, welcomed the more than fifty professional and scientific associations and the general public, pupils, students and parents, stressing that the "Careers" Action has become an institution that aims to build bridges of communication between school and the labour market through accurate and up-to-date information.
The Honourable Minister of Education, Sports and Youth Dr Athena Michaelidou inaugurated the "Careers" Action. In her address she expressed her great satisfaction, congratulated the co-organisers of the Action and stressed the importance of quality guidance, evaluation and improvement of services that provide guidance, modernised and well-informed information on the plethora of options and opportunities in order to plan the academic and professional path of young people as early as possible, starting from the last classes of primary education. She mentioned the special emphasis given to the issues of vocational rehabilitation and acquisition of skills which, especially in the current period, are very high on the priorities and interests of the young people of Cyprus.
In her address, Environment Commissioner Dr. Maria Panayiotou expressed her pleasure and satisfaction for the pioneering Action "Careers" by the Counselling and Vocational Education Service. She stressed the importance of the European Year of Skills and the opportunities it offers young people for education and training and creates new challenges. He then referred to the green and digital transition that make the need for lifelong education, objective information on the needs of the labour market and the skills required in various professions even more urgent, a goal that the "Careers" Action also serves.
The President of the Pancyprian Confederation of Federations of Associations of Secondary Education Parents' Associations, Mr. Lois Constantinou, who thanked for the co-organization and cooperation, as well as the Secretary of the Pancyprian Coordinating Committee of Pupils (PSCM) Eurydice Christofides, who stressed the importance of such actions that empower young people in their choices and have added value in their efforts for accurate and comprehensive information.
During the two-day event, hundreds of pupils and their parents, as well as young people, students and anyone interested visited the Filoxenia Conference Centre and the "Careers" action and were informed about the situation on the labour market and the options it offers. Ultimately, young people were given a message of optimism, re-launch and action in their efforts to adapt their career path to the current labour market or to their own needs, skills and desires.
