The Department of Modern and Contemporary Culture of the Ministry of Culture is pleased to announce a number of recent successes of Cypriot Cinema on the international festival scene, which highlight the talented and creative contribution of Cypriot film works internationally.

The presence of Cypriot cinema at the 64th Thessaloniki Film Festival, which recently concluded, was special, once again, with important awards and the participation of Cypriot productions in the official competition programmes of the Festival. In particular, Kyros Papavasileiou's film "Caterpillar Nymph Butterfly" received two awards, the Audience Film Forward Award and the Music Award for MMMD, while the film project "Stringa" by Alexandra Matthaiou and Maria Hatzakou, which is currently in development, received the first prize at the Crossroads Co-Production Forum of the Festival.

Three prizes, including the Festival's Grand Prize, the Golden Alexander, were awarded to the film "ANIMAL" by Sofia Exarchou, which is a Cypriot minority co-production, while the new project "My Name is Lily" by director Yannas Amerikanou was selected by the SEE (South East European Film Network) for development funding of 9,000 euros.

The official participation in the Festival also included the film "Monopoly" by Ioakim Mylonas, which received excellent reviews, and the short film "Buffer Zone" by Savvas Stavrou.

The presence of Cyprus at the Festival's Market was also important, for yet another year, where the Ministry of Culture was represented with its own booth, staffed by its officials who were responsible for promoting our film product and Cyprus as a film destination.

Meanwhile, director Argyro Nikolaou and producer Konstantinos Nikiforou secured two awards at the prestigious Connecting Cottbus Pitching Forum for their film project "EKSKAFEIS". Specifically, the Cypriot filmmakers received the cocoPITCH Audience Award for the best presentation of a project in the development stage of a production plan and the Avanpost Pitch Packaging Award for a "movingly personal and powerful presentation of a project that is expected to be both timely and universal".

Finally, the Cyprus-US international co-production, "The Islander", by Cypriot director Stelana Clearis, shot in Cyprus and starring Harry Connick Jr, has signed an agreement with the film sales company Exchange to promote the film in the American Film Market, thus ensuring the success of the film in a wide distribution network.

All the above productions are co-financed by the Ministry of Culture through the special programmes for cinema and the recommendations of the Film Advisory Committee, making them one of Cyprus' strongest assets in the field of cultural diplomacy and the international cultural scene.
