The Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and following an initiative of the Armenian Representative to the House of Representatives Mr. Vartkesh Mahtesyan undertook the hosting of 30 refugee children, who fled to Armenia from Nagorno-Karabakh because of the war, and three escorts. Understanding the drama and pain of the thousands of refugees who were expelled from their ancestral homes, as a people who have experienced and are experiencing the pain of uprooting and refugeeism for almost 50 years, it was with great joy and emotion that we welcomed these children to Cyprus.

Through the implementation of the hospitality, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus has demonstrated the unreserved sympathy and support of the Republic of Cyprus to the Armenian people who are suffering and especially to the children, the innocent victims of the war. The whole hospitality programme, which was prepared by the Office of the Armenian Representative, in close cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and with the support of various other institutions, gave the children the opportunity to get to know Cyprus, its history, its culture and its political problem. At the same time, it brought them in contact with the Armenian community of Cyprus. In this context, the children visited, among others, the Armenian Narek schools in Larnaca, Nicosia and Limassol, participating in the schools' daily activities. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs invited the guests, together with the choir of the Narek Armenian Primary School in Nicosia, to the traditional Christmas, New Year and Epiphany caroling event held in its hall. The children sang Christmas songs in the Armenian language in the presence of the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Dr Athena Michaelides, and touched the audience.
