February 11 has been established, by decision of the European Commission, as a day to celebrate the Single European Emergency Number 112, in order to further inform the public about its existence and use. 112 enables all citizens moving within the European Union to be connected to the local and relevant emergency response authorities when faced with an emergency situation.
The 112 emergency number can be called free of charge at any time of the day or night from any fixed or mobile device. Communication in Cyprus is currently possible in Greek and English. At this stage the call to 112 is automatically transferred to the Police Message Control Centre in the Province from which it is made, and if no line is available the call is automatically transferred to another Province.
You can call 112 in emergencies such as a serious accident, sudden/intensive illness, fire, etc. Avoid calling 112 in non-emergencies as there is a risk that your call may slow down the delivery of help to people who really need immediate and urgent support.
