Willingness to meet with the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, showed his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, in his televised remarks to the Ukrainian people.
Zelensky said Israel could play a role in a solution, while he could meet with his Russian counterpart in Jerusalem.
The Ukrainian president also said Russia was sending new forces to Ukraine after it suffered what he said were its biggest losses in decades.
Zelensky also said he spoke by phone with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron about putting pressure on Russia to release the mayor of Melitopol, whom Ukraine says was kidnapped by Russian forces yesterday.
At the same time, he urged Russia to support an agreed ceasefire to allow evacuations from the city of Mariupol to proceed, after blaming Moscow for the failure of previous such attempts.
"If they want to level Kiev and kill thousands of civilians, they have the power to do it," he said."
