"Compromises should not be the betrayal of your homeland", the Ukrainian president stressed
Volodymyr Zelensky, who once again appeared positive in a meeting with Vladimir Putin, remains faithful to his position that he will not give in to Russian demands.
"The conflict can be resolved only through direct dialogue between the leaders of Ukraine and Russia on the basis of mutual compromise," the Ukrainian president said in an interview with the German newspaper Bild.
Asked to respond on the acceptance or not of Donbass independence and Russia's sovereignty in Crimea, he replied, "the question here is not what I can give. In any negotiation, my goal is to end the war with Russia. And I am also ready to take certain measures."
He also noted that one can "make s compromises, but these should not be the betrayal of your homeland. And the other side must also be ready to compromise that is why they are called compromises. This is the only way out of this situation. We can't talk about the details yet. We have not yet had direct contact between the presidents. Only after direct talks between the two presidents can we end this war."
In relation to his country's accession to the EU, he pointed out that governments that "do not support our accession to the EU point out the reforms that still need to be done. They do not consider us equal. I still have a lot of unanswered questions there."
Asked about Germany's actions, Zelenski said the following: "We see some steps that Germany is taking to support us, Nord Stream 2, sanctions and so on. We see what Germany is doing."
