Why is the whole planet renting houses in Ukraine through Airbnb? Over 60,000 reservations in two days A very original move

Bombed-out landscapes, water and power cuts, shortages of food and basic necessities, human misery and danger of death

All of the above make up the backdrop in the cities of Ukraine, which is under Russian siege for the 10th day. However, in recent days many Ukrainian cities are among the... most popular choices right now on Airbnb.

Of course, the reason why hundreds are booking houses, apartments and rooms in Kiev, Kherson, Mariupol and other Ukrainian cities is not to... experience the war first hand.

They just want to help the Ukrainians however they can. The everyday people who are experiencing the nightmare of war.

Over 60,000 reservations in two days

As Airbnb revealed, in the last two days alone, more than 61 reservations were made for more than 61.In just two hours, more than 61,000 overnight stays have been booked in Ukraine, with a total amount of almost $2 million.

In 48 hours, 61,406 nights have been booked in Ukraine.

The idea started on Social Media

After the idea went viral on Social Media, many people from all over the world wanted to send a little financial help to a suffering people and the responses they received from their Ukrainian "hosts" were truly touching.

We booked some nights in Kharkiv on AirBnB to try to send some tangible, immediate assistance. I wrote the hosts a message and received this back. Only sharing in case you're not sure if it's a helpful thing to do. pic.twitter.com/yGzRZVFflk

"I live in Melbourne, Australia and unfortunately I will not be travelling to stay in your beautiful apartment, but I thought if I make this booking I might directly help someone affected by the horrible situation in Ukraine at the moment. I hope it helps a little, know that the world is on the side of Ukraine and I really hope peace is restored to the region. And when that happens, I would love to come and visit your beautiful country," Kate from Australia wrote to the hosts of an Airbnb apartment.

"Hi Kate. Good people are not lost to the world. Now tears are coming to my eyes and I am crying with happiness for the first time in these tragic days. Thank you very much. It will be my pleasure to hug you when we meet in peace," was the response she got."

Feeling helpless, I booked an @Airbnb in Kiev for a stay this week knowing the money would go directly to someone there. There were no air bnb fees attached. This is the beautiful response I got. She also told me they know the world supports them and they can all feel it ??? pic.twitter.com/j9h88AEvit

Airbnb, which has already announced the suspension of its operations in Russia and Belarus, has moved to remove its commissions for bookings in Ukraine so that the entire amount allocated by users of its platform ends up in the hands of those in need.

Advice is also circulating on social media for those who want to empower Ukrainians in this way, so that the money actually ends up with everyday people and not with businesses that may be managing properties on Airbnb or with con artists who have already appeared on the platform.

Look for hosts who already have reviews from people who stayed in their homes before the war, most tips say.
